Chapter 5 Conclusions and Future Works
Based on the results and discussions of the study, the conclusions and the direction of future works are presented in this chapter.
5.1 Conclusions
The distinguishing features of the present study are proposing a hybrid learning model by integrating before-class lecture video viewing and in-class lab approach to teaching image processing concepts, developing lab packages for high school image processing teaching, and comparing students’ achievement, attitudes, and characteristics when the lecture video was made available on the course website for before-class learning.
The followings are conclusions of this study:
1. The hybrid before-class lecture video viewing and supervised in-class lab work is a feasible and effective way to teaching and for learning about image processing.
2. The new learning model also facilitated in-class student-student and student-teacher interactions. Finally, students’ understanding and interest in learning of Computer Science were also improved.
3. Although the results shows that the two groups with lab work (video+lab group and lecture+lab group) showed no significant differences in their learning achievement,
student in video+lab group had better responses toward the lab activities. More than half of students in lecture+lab group felt the time allotted for the lab work was too short. However, more than eighty percent of students in video+lab group felt the time allotted for the lab work was appropriate. Additionally, more peer
82
interaction was found in video+lab group.
4. Students’ learning motivation is an important factor for before-class lecture video viewing. Students with higher mastery goals intended to view lecture video before-class. In the learning model of using lecture video to facilitate before-class learning, watching the lecture video before-class was instrumental in successful in-class learning. How to promote students’ learning motivation is also important when utilizing lecture video to facilitate before-class learning.
5.2 Future Works
The followings are recommendations for future investigation:
1. This study was conducted at two senior high schools to examine the hybrid learning model that using lecture video and lab approach to teaching image processing concepts. Due to the time limitation, hand-written recognition was chosen as the learning topic. Future research may target the research setting to other senior high schools and other learning topics, which will yield a whole picture and understanding of this new learning model.
2. Lab based approach was chosen as in-class activities to enhance students’ learning concepts of image processing after before-class lecture video viewing in this study.
More learning approaches could be designed and integrated in in-class learning activities when utilizing lecture video to facilitate before-class learning in different domains.
3. This study also addressed students’ learning behavior as analyzed from students’
application-specific self-efficacy and students’ motivation to devote oneself to learning when putting in-class lecture video online for before-class learning. It is also recommended that further exploration be expedited to examine differences
83
between students in other perspectives of personal characteristics and different taxonomy of learning styles.
4. Seven features were available in the handwritten feature extraction tool and recognition tool designed in the current study. More features can be designed and applied in these tools for students to observe more characteristics of handwritten numerals.
5. The system and tools utilized in the study are based on web learning platform.
Mobile technology emerged in recent years provide ubiquitous learning opportunities enabling students access learning resource without the limitation of time and place. Similar studies could be conducted on different mobile learning environment, such as Tablet PCs, cell phones, and PDAs to provide more convenient learning environment.
The research results revealed that students viewing more lecture video before-class performed significantly better in the achievement test than the ones who viewed less.
That is, watching lectures on recorded video before the hands-on lab exercises is useful for the successful learning of the image processing concepts. However, many students had less motivation or just forgot to view video. More strategies or activities can be designed to promote students’ intention and to remind students to view video before class.
