研究生:Leonard Augustine Hong 請讀完下篇文章,然後回答下列五個問題。

Filling out Forms

As a citizen of the modern global village, you will have many chances to fill out forms in English. If you want to visit another country, for example, you will need to fill out a visa application form. When you arrive in that country, you must fill out a customs declaration form. If you want to order something from a foreign company, you may have to fill out an order form. If you apply for a job at a foreign company, you will need to fill out an employment application form. If you go to study or live in an English-speaking country, you may have to fill out forms to apply for a credit card, open up a bank account, or deposit money in an account. Writing a check is also similar to filling out a form.

Whenever you fill out a form, be sure to read the directions carefully. Also be sure to understand what each space is asking for and where you are supposed to fill in the information. Many Chinese, for example, may write their “first name” in the space for “last name” because they don’t know that in English “last name” means family name. Some Chinese also write “black” in the space for “color of eyes,” when in fact their eyes are brown. One of our friends once surprised her American boss because she wrote “yellow” in the space for “race.” She didn’t know that “yellow” is a negative word when it is used in this way. The right word to use is “Asian.”

You also have to fill in all the spaces clearly. Except for your signature, never use longhand; always print the information.

Following are a hotel registration form and a disembarkation card. Do you know how to fill them out?

COMPREHENSION CHECK

1. When we arrive in another country, which form should we fill out?

(A)a registration form (B) a visa application form (C) an order form (D) a customs declaration form

2. Why should we always print the information on a form?

(A) It is more convenient. (B) It is cheaper. (C) It is faster. (D) It is clearer.

3. Why is it improper to write “yellow” in the space for “race”?

(A)Because "yellow" is an ugly color.

(B)Because "yellow" is not understandable.

(C)Because "yellow" might implies another meaning.

(D)Because "yellow" is an informal word.

4. Here are chances for people to fill out forms in English. Which is probably not included?

(A) go traveling (B) look for a job (C) online ordering (D) go dancing 5. According to this passage, what is the main reason we need to fill out forms?

(A)to make money (B)to help other people (C)to live in a modern society (D) to buy things we want

Appendix J

The Familiar Text

參與者編號:_____________________

Weather

What do you think is one of the most popular topics of conversation all over the world? The weather, of course. But when people talk about the weather, they are usually just making small talk.

Most people don’t have serious conversations about the weather, because most don’t really understand it. For example, why does it rain? Or why does it snow? What causes storms like typhoons? Most of us have only a vague idea of the answers to these questions.

So why does it rain? The answer has mainly to do with clouds. Clouds are made up of many drops of water. These are held up by the rising movement of the air. But some drops are too heavy and so they fall to the earth as rain.

If the air in the cloud is cold enough, the drops will freeze and fall as snow. Or, if the air movement in the cloud is strong enough, it will carry some of these frozen drops back up to the top of the cloud many times. The frozen drops collect more ice and get bigger and bigger and eventually fall to the earth as hail. Hailstones can sometimes get as big as baseballs, and they can be very dangerous. They may break windows or even hurt people.

And what causes typhoons? They are formed because winds and clouds tend to rotate around an area of low air pressure. The low pressure areas tend to form over the warm ocean in the summer.

Because the winds move in a circle, the middle of the typhoon is usually very calm. It is called the eye of the typhoon. But after the eye passes, the strong winds return. These winds can be very powerful, sometimes blowing up to 240 kilometers per hour.

In addition to these, there are many other types of weather phenomena. If you know something about them, perhaps the next time you talk about the weather, you can do more than just make small talk.

COMPREHENSION CHECK

1. If the air in a cloud is cold enough, what will raindrops turn into? (A)rain (B)hail (C)typhoon (D)snow

2. Where are typhoons formed? (A)over the cold ocean (B) over the warm ocean (C)over the cold land (D)over the dry land

3. What are clouds made up of?

(A)tiny snow (B)tiny hailstones (C)the moisture in the air (D)strong winds 4. What is true about "the eye of a typhoon"?

(A) It is usually very strong. (B) It is full of rain (C) It is caused by high pressure (D) It is calm.

5. What is true according this passage?

(A) The typhoons and hailstones can break window and hurt people, so people should not go out in rainy days.

(B) Most people actually know little about whether, especially the cause of different weather phenomena.

(C) People should avoid talking about weather if they do not really understand it.

(D) "Making small talk" means people talk to little children.

PLEASE WAIT BEHIND WHITE LINE

Dear Grandma and Grandpa, March 24, 2000

Thank you so much for the sweater you sent me for Christmas! It fits perfectly, and purple is my favorite color! It’s very warm, too – just perfect for the weather we’ve been having here recently. All of my classmates want one like it!

Cathy really likes the doll you gave her. She plays with it every day, and she tries to take it everywhere!

I hope you are both doing well.

See you this summer!

Sincerely,

Billy
