英語的有定冠詞與無定冠謂除了分別表示「定指 J 與「非定指 J (包括「殊指 J

、「任指 J 、「未指 J )以外，還可以表示「泛指 J 。所謂「泛指 J (generic

refe-renee) 是說指涉的對象超越個別再雇員或特定的數量而涉及整個集合或類目。在「泛 指 J 的讀法裡常就整個類的通性、特徵或趨向做一艘性的陳述。英語裡表示「泛指J 的說法，主要有三種:(a) 有定冠詞 the 與單數可數名詞連用，(b) 無定冠詞 a(n) 與單 數可數名詞連用，(e) 無定冠詞拉與複數可數名詞或單數不可數名詞連用。例如:

(174) a. The tiger is a dangerous anjmal.

b. A tiger is a dangerous animal.

c. 拉 tigers are dangerous animals.

d. 拉 blood

is thicker than

以下分別討論這三種「泛指J 的說法。

set X) ，但並不以其指涉對象的存在為前提。刊的因此，這一種「泛指 J 的說法用單

數人稱代詞來照應，在意義與用法上與 any 相近，卸不相同。試比較:

在英語裡三種「泛指 J 的說法中，這一種說法所受的限制最嚴。通常只能出現於 主語的位置互並且還受下面幾種限制。

(助這種「泛指J 名詞組只能出現於主語的位置，所以不能把這種「泛指J 主語 名詞組改為被動旬，試比較:

。這種「泛指 J 名詞在語意上屬於單數，所以不能做為語意上表示接數的述語

(如 be common, be extinct, be found, abound_J in~re.a~ 等)-的主語，試比較:
