Abstract

Hue (1989) reported a word inferiority effect of detecting position transposed character pairs. To explain the phenomenon, Hue cited Healy’s (1976) unitization model, and argued that “word” is a unit of reading in Chinese. The present study was designed to replicate the word inferiority effect reported by Hue and to test his theory concerning how the effect is produced. In Experiment 1, the subjects’ eye movements were recorded while they were detecting misprints in texts presenting on a computer in two different writing directions (vertical: the characters of a text were printed from the top to bottom of a computer monitor, or horizontal: the characters were printed from left to right). There were four types of misprints: a high or low frequency two-character word with its compositional characters transposed in position, or a two-character word with its second character replaced by an orthographically or phonologically similar character. The experimental results show that writing direction neither affects a subject’s eye movement pattern nor his detection of the four types of misprints. The detection rate of the orthographic misprints is higher than that of the other three types of misprints, and among the other three, the detection rates are similar. Experiment 2 was a partial replication of Experiment 1, with the texts printed on papers, and the characters of the texts arranged vertically. The pattern of the results of this study replicates the word inferiority effect reported by Hue, but does not support his theory. Instead, the authors argue that the results of this study indicate that

the word inferiority effect of misprint detection is a natural product of the process of reading Chinese, which is best described by the structural precedence hypothesis proposed by Koriat and Greenberg (1994).
