一、參加會議經過

為順利完成此次論文發表,本人於 101 年 12 月 06 日申請出國參加國際會議 簽陳 (如附件一)。本人於 101 年 12 月 12 日下午於桃園國際機場出發至香港理工 大學中參加第一屆中國國際專業英語協會暨第四屆亞洲專業英語國際世界應用語 言學大會。大會於 12 月 13 日開始至 16 日中午結束,12 月 16 日返回台灣。

期間本人在大會安排的時間 (Friday, December 14, 2012, 17:00-17:30) 和 地點 (Y613, 6/F. Core Y)發表論文。論文題目為: “ESP Teacher Education in the Era of Globalization: Knowledge Base, Curriculum Development and Implementation”(詳 見附件二 & 三)。 另外,也參加多場與本年度研究主題相關,由世界各國學者所發 表的論文的場次。

二、與會心得

此研討會的論文主軸共有七個: (1) ESP theories, (2) ESP teaching, English in specialized domains in ESL/EFL contexts, (3) ESP research, (4) ESP testing and assessment, (5) ESP practice, (5) EAP/ESP within a World Englishes paradigm.

很高興有機會聆聽幾場不錯的演講,有的與本年度研究主題相關,有的是研究 長期以來有興趣的研究主題。其中有一次場令我印象非常深刻,Dr. Michael Guest 以他的個案實證研究指出: discourse analysis (言談分析) 和 corpus analysis (語料庫分析) 在專業英文教材研發各自的優勢與劣勢,透過實際的個案,了解不同 研究取徑在教學、研究、實務上的運用,對於日後想透過大學-高職夥伴關係發展適 合的教材教法,有很大的助益。

發表認識她的研究工作,很榮幸這一次的研討會上有機會聆聽她的發表。此次論文 發表的題目: English for (very) specific purposes: a framework for ESP curriculum design. 與過去以來研究的主題相關,Dr. Lockwood 這篇論文對於今 年度國科會計畫的構思有關鍵的影響,很感謝國科會的補助,讓我有機會聆聽並學 習。

三、建議

此次大會於香港理工大學英文系主辦,大會舉辦期間,各項工作安排無不盡 心盡力,與會者可以善加利用良好的硬體設備,發表其論文,參加者,也同時能 在大會安排的舒適環境中,專心聆聽論文發表和專題演講。唯一美中不足的是:

會並沒有將論文發人的電子信箱隨摘要附上,如此一來,徒增尋找正確電子郵件 信箱的難度。

建議大會能在下一屆主辦時,能在論文發表者的電子信箱素隨摘要 附上,好讓因時間衝突無法參加的論文場次,可以透過大會手冊上的論文 摘要和電子信箱,直接與論文發表人聯繫,索取相關資料。同時也 可以透 過所附上的論文摘要和講者的個人資料,有機會研讀、吸收、透過電子郵 件向與會學者作進一步請教。

四、攜回資料名稱及內容

本次會議主要帶回第一屆中國國際專業英語協會暨第四屆亞洲專業英語國 際研討會大會手冊(Joint International Conference – Mapping ESP Frontiers:

Bridging, Teaching, Research and Practice – The 1st International Conference of the Chinese Association for ESP & the 4th international Conference on ESP in Asia ,見附 件四),及中國 ESP 研究 (Chinese Journal of ESP) (見附見五)。由於研究者平 日所閱讀專業英文相關文獻皆是英文,Chinese Journal of ESP 是由外語教學與 研究出版社發行,這也是我第一次有機會看到用中文發表專業英文相關的研究。

五、銘謝

感謝國科會補助出席此次國際學術會議,此行的收穫,對於本學年度的計畫 論文發表,受益良多;本研究部分成果已獲刊登於 Journal of English Education (詳見附件六).

接受發文論文之摘要 Abstract

What knowledge base is required in order to respond to the call for a new

re-conceptualization for ESP (English for Specific Purposes) teacher education in the era of globalization? Informed by theories and research on second language teacher education from a sociocultural perspective on professional development, English as a Lingua Franca, and a school and university partnership, the presentation reports on the preliminary

findings of a three-year research project that aims to (1) propose a new knowledge base for ESP teacher education, (2) identify mediational tools, affordances and constraints at various stages of ESP curriculum development and implementation, and finally (3) examine, modify, reconstruct, and reconsolidate the knowledge base for ESP teacher education.

Participants are college teacher-learners who are prepared to be ESP practitioners for high school students of business in an intensive ESP program. Activity Theory

(Engeström, 1987) has been used as an analytical framework to analyze both the qualitative and quantitative data sets in order to address the research questions of each year. The preliminary analysis yields to several findings that are worth further discussions and explorations.

First, a new re-conceptualization of knowledge base for ESP teacher education helps bridge the missing link between L2 teacher education and ESP teaching and learning.

Second, this project, based on a new conceptualization, can enrich the literature that lacks empirical studies on the interaction between specialist content knowledge and ESP instructional practice. Third, the study calls for a re-examination of the tensions between the local needs versus global demands situated in the Taiwanese educational system.

Ultimately, this study expects to enhance our understandings in the interrelationships between ESP theory, research and practice, so as to create a theoretically and

pedagogically sound model for ESP professional development suitable for the Taiwanese sociocultural and educational context in the era of globalization. (298 words)
