8. Definition of terms

Age - Number of complete years an individual has passed from birth until the reference period.

Always in Macao - An individual that was born in Macao and never had left Macao continuously for 6 months or more.

Attending school - The process of receiving any level of regular education at an educational institution by an individual aged 3 or above.

Bedroom - Space within a living quarter with a minimum area of 4 m2 (43 ft2) and generally demarcated by walls or partitions of at least 2 meters high, intended to be used by members of the household to sleep and rest.

Collective living quarter

- Living quarter in one or more buildings managed by a specific entity and occupied by a group of people.

Collective living quarter includes the following types:

- Hotels and similar establishments - Institutions

- Staff quarters - Camps

- Other collective living quarters

Disability - Congenital or acquired physical, mental, intellectual or psychological deficiency that hinders the health conditions of an individual, causing difficulties in carrying out daily activities, even when auxiliary equipment is used, assistance is needed.

Domestic living quarter

- Non-collective living quarter occupied by one or more households for habitation.

Domestic living quarter includes the following types:

- Conventional living quarters (e.g. living quarters in residential buildings and quarters inside industrial and commercial buildings that are used entirely for human habitation)

- Temporary living quarters (e.g. squatter huts, immovable boat-houses) - Conventional living quarters not solely used for habitation (e.g. garage,

care-taker’s room, warehouse, office and factory used for habitation) - Mobile living quarters (e.g. boats or vessels, caravans)

- Other living quarters not elsewhere classified Economically active

population

- Total number of individuals aged 14 and above who are available to participate in the production of goods and services during the reference period. It comprises the employed population and the unemployed population.

Economic activity status

- Participation of an individual in economic activity, which can be classified as economically active population and economically inactive population.

Economically inactive population

- Total number of individuals that are not considered as economically active population during the reference period and do not satisfy the conditions to be classified as the employed or the unemployed. Including:

Individuals aged less than 14, students, home-makers, individuals that are permanently incapable of working, the retired, individuals living on rental income and voluntary workers.

Educational attainment

- The highest level of formal education that an individual has successfully completed. An individual that did not complete pre-primary education was grouped under "No schooling".

Employment earnings

- For the employees, it refers to the remuneration received. For the employers and own-account workers, it is the receipt of gross production value minus production expenditure and depreciation of assets.

Employed population

- Total number of individuals aged 14 and above who worked for at least 1 hour during the reference period, for remuneration, profits or family gains, in cash or in kind.

Ethnicity - Blood relationship of an individual formed naturally by birth.

Family nucleus - Composed by two or more household members who are related by blood, marriage or adoption etc.

Household - Individuals living together and make common provision for food or other essentials for living. Members of a household may not be related, but share part or all of a living quarter. An individual living alone is also considered as a household.

Household composition

- The classification is derived from the number of family nuclei and the relationship between the household members. The categories are as follows:

- One-person household

- Household with one or more family nuclei - Household with no family nucleus

Household head - An individual aged 16 and above who is recognized by the rest of the member(s) as the representative of the household.

Industry - Economic activity engaged by an individual, enterprise or an establishment during the reference period. It is classified according to the “Classification of Economic Activities of Macao – Revision 1” (CAM – Rev. 1).

Living quarter - An area that is structurally separated with independent entrance intended for human habitation.

Separated denotes the area can be isolated from other individuals.

Independence denotes the existence of direct access from public ground without passing through other living quarters.

Living quarter is classified as follows:

- Domestic living quarter.

- Collective living quarter.

Marital status - Personal status of an individual in relation to the marriage laws or customs of the country/territory.

Mobile resident - An individual staying in Macao for at least one month but less than 3 months during the 6 months before or after the reference date.

Mortgage payment - The monthly mortgage payment to banks or similar institutions by households for the living quarter they occupied.

Nationality - The status of being a legal national of a country.

Occupation - Tasks or duties undertaken by an individual during the reference period. It is classified according to the “Classification of Occupations of Macao” (COPM).

Statistical Method

Parking spot for automobile at night

- The place where households put their cars at night.

Including:

- Public car-park – Free or charged parking space in public car-park where no user restrictions applied.

- Private car-park – Parking that is restricted to specific groups of users (e.g.

owners or tenants of parking space in residential buildings).

- Street parking – Free or charged parking space in streets.

Place of birth - Country or territory where an individual was born.

Place of previous residence

- Country or territory outside Macao where an individual had lived for at least 6 months before making Macao as the place of usual residence.

Place of usual residence

- Place where an individual usually lived during the reference period.

If an individual stayed mostly in Macao during the 6 months before or after the reference period, his/her place of usual residence was Macao; otherwise, it was the place he/she had mostly stayed 6 months before the reference date.

Present population - Total number of individuals staying in any living quarters in Macao during the reference moment, irrespective of whether Macao was their usual place of residence.

Regular education - Systematic courses covering pre-primary education to tertiary education that were organized primarily for children and young people.

Relationship with household head

- The relationship between the household head and household members, deriving from blood-relation, marriage, adoption, etc.

Rental payment - The monthly amount paid by a household for occupying the living quarter.

Resident population - The total of the usual residents and mobile residents.

Status in employment

- The relationship of a working individual with his/her occupation, which can be distinguished as an employer, own-account worker, employee and unpaid family worker.

Tenure of the living quarter

- The status of occupancy of a living quarter. It consists of:

- Owner-occupier - Provided by employer - Tenant

- Others Total years of

residence in Macao

- Number of complete years until the reference date that an individual had established his/her usual residence in Macao. Any period of continuous absence from Macao for six months or more had to be deducted in reckoning the period.

Unemployed population

- Total number of individual aged 14 and above that, during the reference period, fulfilled all of the following conditions:

- Not having a job or any formal job attachment to an employer;

- Available for work with remuneration or running own business;

- Seeking job for the last 30 days.

Usual language - The language an individual mostly used at home.

Usual resident - An individual staying in Macao for at least 3 months during the 6 months before or after the reference date.
