The influx of immigrants and expatriates contributed to an increment in the number of population aged 15-64, thus reducing the proportion of the elderly population and the elderly dependency ratio. Meanwhile, the median age of the population was 35.3 in By-census 2006, an increment of 2.0 years compared with Census 2001.
The prolonged life expectancy and the relatively decreasing number of newborns over the past years have brought about an ageing population. This is reflected in the ageing ratio, a gauge of population ageing that was the proportion of the elderly population to the youth population aged 0-14, had increased from 26.7% in 1996 to 33.6% in 2001, and surged further to 46.3% in 2006. Similar to many countries and territories worldwide, Macao has encountered the aging of its population.
