This study highlights VR’s enchanting features and elements, leading to strong motivation and engagement with the application in young learners. The results from the questionnaire indicate that participants take a great liking to learning English vocabulary through the medium of VR. This may be effective for future classroom teachings when it comes to EFL learning, as teachers are able to incorporate lessons in
70
class with appropriate VR gaming applications that may enhance better language learning in the classroom.
This study also corroborates with the aforementioned findings, as the VR group were able to achieve a higher score than the PC group in the translation and recognition tests. Furthermore, the significance result in the delayed translation posttest is a testament to VR features being of great benefit in aiding better gains in long-term memory. Thus, VR increases learner involvement and interaction which may contribute to their improved vocabulary gains and retention. This opens new possibilities and opportunities for teachers to adopt in EFL vocabulary instruction in Taiwan.
In sum, the study supports the inclusion of VR when designing or preparing VR-based activities in an EFL classrooms as it contains multiple benefits in
facilitating vocabulary learning, as well as motivating elements for young learners.
Teachers may also take advantage of VR with its capability to cater to individual learning, as it may allow each student to use VR and learn at their own pace. This may overcome the barrier of learner anxiety which could occur in traditional language classrooms, as students may be afraid to voice their queries to teachers in front of the class. VR thus provides an optimal learning environment which may help develop students’ L2 communicative competence and language use and application in authentic contexts.
