Research Limitations and Future Research

V. Conclusions

3. Research Limitations and Future Research

Although this research was able to contribute to the three-dimensional model of growth, it has three limitations. First, the sample size was not sufficient. Due to time constraint, only one company was chosen to conduct the interview. Even though the company is representative in its category, a larger sample size would have provided more insights into how family firms overcome challenges in their process of development. Secondly, the interview subjects in the company were not sufficient. Due to the unavailability of other interview candidates, this study only chose the eldest sibling in the second generation. Although he provides a balanced view of the family and the business, more candidates could have provided more insights into the dynamics of the family and the business. Lastly, family conflict is a private and sensitive theme. For this reason, the interviewee may be reserving when sharing about this topic; therefore, findings on the family dimension may have been slightly biased.

There is still much research to be done concerning family businesses. Every family business is unique in their ownership, family and business dimensions.

Therefore, future research should increase the sample size of interview candidates and companies to provide a more comprehensive view of the challenges that these firms are facing and the measures they have taken to overcome them. The uniqueness of family businesses has led past research studies to focus mostly on the behavior of the firm. Extant literature shows that family firms must develop to be more formalized and professional and a common measure adopted is the hiring of non-family employees. Therefore, future research must be directed towards understanding how family and non-family employees interact with each other and

71

whether it does lead the family firm towards being more professionally-oriented. It such ask questions such as whether opening up the firm to non-family employees is an advantage or a disadvantage to the family business.
