Number of establishments operating in Telecommunications Services decreased by 2 year-on-year to 13, and that of persons engaged dropped by 32 to 1,700. Receipts of the industry went down by 18.0% year-on-year, with a 38.4% dip in receipts from Sales of Goods which was caused by a decline in sales of telecommunications products. Besides, receipts from Communications Services fell by 5.9%.

Expenditure of the industry decreased by 23.4% year-on-year.

Purchase of Goods & Services and Commissions slid by 32.7%, of which expenditure on purchase of goods for resale slipped by 35.7%. Operating Expenses went down by 2.3%, with expenditure on communications falling by 12.0% while that on contractual services (cleaning and security services, etc.) rising by 13.8%.

Besides, Compensation of Employees registered a growth of 3.7%

year-on-year.

Gross Surplus of the industry recorded a decrease of 8.2%

year-on-year. Gross Surplus Ratio (35.9%) and Gross Surplus-Expenditure Ratio (57.6%) went up by 3.8 percentage points and 9.5 percentage points respectively. Meanwhile, Gross Value Added went down by 5.7%.

Gross Fixed Capital Formation declined by 49.1% year-on-year, ascribable to the sale of assets such as telecommunications

-In view of the vast survey coverage, systematic sampling was adopted for establishments operating taxis, trucks, activities of transport agencies and similar services (customs clearance, goods distribution, etc.), while complete enumeration was carried out to the rest of the sector.

Results of taxis, trucks, activities of transport agencies and similar services (customs clearance, goods distribution, etc.) were drawn from statistical inference. Method of statistical inference was based on the sampling method used, as follows:

The Survey covers the establishments mainly operating in the Transport, Storage & Communications Sector in the reference year.

The list of establishments is originated from the Statistics and Census Service, supplemented with information from Financial Services Bureau and Transport Bureau. According to the Classification of Economic Activities of Macao, Rev. 1, activities of travel agencies are grouped under Supporting and Auxiliary Transport Activities; therefore, information on Travel Agencies (the main establishment, branches and service counters of a travel agency are combined and counted as one single statistical unit), which is published separately in the

“Travel Agencies Survey” report, is also included in the global results of the Transport, Storage & Communications Sector.

For ease of identifying the sub-industries in Land Transport, data on establishments operating “Urban Mass Passenger Transport (including buses, light rapid transit, etc.)”, “Cross-boundary Coaches/Port Shuttle Buses”, “School Buses”, “Taxis and Similar Establishments”, “Trucks” and “Other Land Transport” are released separately. In response to the increasing prevalence of parcel collection services in Macao, complete enumeration has been carried out to establishments engaged in parcel collection services since 2020 in order to achieve a better understanding of their operating situation; relevant data are separated from “Activities of Transport Agencies and Similar Services” and are presented individually.

Glossary

Establishment

An economic unit engaging in one or predominantly one kind of economic activity at a single location.

Persons Engaged

All individuals who work for the establishment as at the last working day of the reference year, including full-time employees and unpaid workers;

however, those who are absent on that day and are absent for an indefinite period are excluded.

Receipts

Operating receipts from the provision of services and selling of goods (before any deduction of costs). It includes receipts from Passenger Transport Services; Cargo Transport Services; Storage; Commissions; Postal, Courier & Communications Services; Sales of Goods and other receipts not specified; however, non-operating receipts such as interest received, receipts from other financial assets and insurance claims are excluded.

Expenditure

Include Compensation of Employees, Purchase of Goods & Services and Commissions, Operating Expenses, etc.; however, non-operating expenses such as interest paid and depreciation are excluded.

Operating Expenses

Include expenses on consumables; water supply; fuels; electricity; maintenance & repairs; rents of establishments; rental of taxis; rental of machinery & equipment; premiums for non-labour insurance; bank charges; computer & information; market research & publicity;

communications; business travels; services provided at ports & airports and tolls; transportation of goods; contractual services (including security and cleaning services); and other operating expenses.

Gross Value Added

Equals receipts, plus Changes in Inventories, minus Purchase of Goods & Services and Commissions as well as Operating Expenses.

Gross Fixed Capital Formation

Equals the value of total acquisitions of fixed assets, less the proceeds from sales of fixed assets, within the reference year. Fixed assets include buildings; vehicles; machinery and equipment; computer software; and other durable goods with a lifespan of one year or more. Also included are major repairs, alterations and extensions made to the existing assets.

Gross Surplus

Equals receipts, plus Changes in Inventories, minus expenditure.

Gross Surplus Ratio

Gross Surplus divided by receipts and multiplied by 100%. The higher the ratio, the more efficient a sector is at converting receipts into Gross Surplus.

Gross Surplus-Expenditure Ratio

Gross Surplus divided by expenditure and multiplied by 100%. The higher the ratio, the more cost-effective an establishment is.

Average Value Added per Person Engaged

Gross Value Added divided by number of persons engaged. An indicator that measures the sectoral contribution of each person engaged to the economy.
