5.2.2 Broadly Applying the VALRM as A Listening Comprehension Assisted

Tool

Based on the statistical results and the semi-structured interview, learners using

the VALRM had better listening performance and generated positive attitude toward using the review mechanism. These results indicated that the VALRM had high potential in assisting listening learning and could be generally accepted by teachers and learners for it easiness, convenience and effectiveness. On the contrary, the traditional listening learning websites, such as Youtube, were embedded with too many advertisements which may distract learners’ attention or increase their cognitive load. Thus, the VALRM can be broadly applied as a listening comprehension assisted tool to improve English listening comprehension.

In addition, due to the individuality of the VALRM, it can apply not only to the

instruction in class but also to the self-study. Learners with different abilities can select the reviewing way they need and prefer.

Although the study confirmed the VALRM provided effective support for listening comprehension learning, further studies that consider different factors that may influence research outcomes are needed. Several future research directions are addressed as follows

5.3.1 Evaluating the Effects of Using the VALRM with Long-Term and Larger

Sample Size on Listening Comprehension

Restricted by practical concerns on experimental time and cost, experimental

treatments of the present study only lasted for four weeks. However, long-term

experimental treatments may generate deeper and more convincing influences on learners’ listening learning performance and on their perceptions toward using the

VALRM. Thus, future study should evaluate long-term effects of using the VALRM on learners’ listening comprehension and attitudes. Moreover, since there were only

thirty-nine eighth graders recruited in the study, the effects of learners using the VALRM on listening comprehension may not be fully comprehensive. Therefore, future study with a large sample size should be considered.

5.3.2 Examining What Types of Learners Can Benefit the Most from the

Proposed VALRM

In this study, analytical results show that the VALRM was more effective for

higher proficiency learners than for the lower achievers. Furthermore, there were no significant differences in learners’ English listening comprehension with different learning styles between and within both groups. However, it is essential to understand that in addition to highly advanced learners, what types of learners can benefit the most from the proposed VALRM for English listening learning. For example, further study could take beginners and advanced learners into account.

5.3.3 Analyzing Learners’ English Learning Process

The results of the study merely examine the outcome of learners’ listening comprehension performance; however, how learners made use of the VALRM has still

not been studied. By recording and analyzing learners’ learning processes, different learners’ learning preferences and strategies can be explored clearly; thereby can

provide useful knowledge to modify the system functions or develop new ones according to learners’ learning behavior. Hence, further study could take learners’

learning processes into account.

5.3.4 Examining the Effects of Using the VALRM on Listening Comprehension

The study randomly enrolled thirty-nine eighth graders from two classes of Taipei Municipal Dunhua Junior High School to conduct the instruction experiment;

thereby, focused merely on a specific age group. Hence, future study should confirm whether research subjects with at different ages have different listening comprehension performance.
