2.14.1. The Genesis of Conceptual & Construction Design

■ matter formation

■ exterior pools

■ composition line inside the area

■ interior pools

■ background building for new ceverd 50m swimming pool

1. The general idea for the first stage of the new extended part cover-structure design was to find out suitable composition matter.

As it is the biggest one, it acts as the composition mainstream of the whole concept.

One of the very first sketch of preliminary design concept was originally based on ''amebic'' shape covering the 50m swimming pool with indoor and outdoor elliptical leisure pools shaping the main composition line of the general cover-structure form viewed from inside the area.

sketches, still keeping the amebic shape

`

2. In next few steps I tried to play with the ''amebic'' shape in the mean of adapting it into the functions I already had in the area to find a key point or line I could use for possible further development of my design.

3. Next stage was a connection exploration with the rest of the urban space and thus the implementation which I found as a most likely applicable further composition development key point, I was looking for.

■ examination of existing entrances into the study area and probable new connections

■ original northern entrance

thru the old swimming pool building

■ original southern entrance thru the park gate

■ possible new entrances

4. Final stage of ''amebic'' approach toward form finding.

Conceptual design matter is implemented in the area.

5. The new internal organization of functions that emerged as I put them together with the old one, makes me think about different approach toward the whole design.

6. Figure 2-51 shows a problem I was dealing with later: ''How to define area´s interior and exterior composition line''.

Both lines were the ''light motive'' for further development of the other structures in the area like outside leisure pools and as the size of the study side was not quiet big, these functions had to be designed in the way that will respect the main matter.

7. As I was shaping the main matter applying pneumatic construction, the main ''balloon'' appeared too heavy, rigid and not suitable for the whole area at all in the mean of scale factor.

So I decided to search for more suitable air supported or inflated structure.

8. Somewhere in this sketch there came the inspiration of using the existing elliptical beam - construction in the original swimming pool building´s vault to cover the whole area and thus divides membrane into smaller parts applying ETFE pillow membrane which could be tailored.

9. Enlargement of the original idea - sketch that started development of elliptical beam covering, inspired by original historical swimming pool building vault supported by the analogy of human rib cage structure.

10. Studying the human rib cage made me think about the shape of each rib used in human body, I have realized that shape of the whole cage is pretty complex and also lightweight so if I really want to use the analogy of this example I need to find a suitable material to design the beams from.

I was also amazed by the protective function of the ribs as well as membranes that human chest has.

11. When I applied chose construction idea in my case, I found out that my previous problems with exterior and interior composition lines are solved and I got also an open space area in front of main matter to design my outdoor leisure pool facilities.

12. Finally I tried to apply the idea of protective membranes I found in the human body rib cage. As this membranes primary functions are protecting and keeping constant environment conditions for inner organs in the human cage, I applied it as an analogy in in my case study as a protective layers of my inner environment including pool functions.

13. In this stage I was focused on functional division and development of so called depositional diagram that will include all the functions written in the proposal of competition requirements .

14. In the next stage I canceled Eastern extension including university functions acting as an expansion of expo facilities and put it together with the botanic garden to make the complex more integrated

15. Final CAD drawing in the figure 2-60 shows the entrances in the area and alternative form design using retractable roof in the relaxation pool area

16. At the end I made the implementation study in the surrounding area to make the connections and thus the integration more clear.

17. Next step was to develop the construction shapes and make them works in the main details

18. As I was studying the constructions I wished to apply I also had to considered the fact that each structure has its own dimension restrictions and if it comes to wood and statics the problem of bending is a serious issue.

19. Figure 2-64 shows the application of the all elements chose for concept in 3D so that I got idea how the space would look like.

20. Then I started to develop details of each separate beam connection and the moments of merging of the tensile structure with the wooden bearing system.

21. Once the detail of construction merge was done I and my colleague we were focused on development of typology and interior design of the old 25m historical swimming pool building (fig. 2-65) and also new 50m covered swimming pool facility

22. Typological study was the longest and the most important process as we had to design suitable inner function spaces, define dimensions, capacities and combine it with respect to the chose construction dimensions.

23. Figure 2-67 shows typological study sketches development of the new spa and wellness facility placed under the tribune of the new swimming pool .

24. During the development of typology I also designed the idea of the main street facade which was quiet crucial because it had to fulfill not just the aesthetic values, but also the noise separation wall criteria as the street that was a former channel is one of the most frequent in the city..

25. In one of the last steps the system of construction was studied and developed. Originally I wanted to use steel girder, but according to the length, shape, elasticity and lightweight criteria I decided to apply VTC treated laminated elliptical wooden beam to fulfill requirements construction was expected to have.

26. Merge of Tensile structure represented by ETFE pillow membrane together with the wooden beam was finished and chose details were developed.

27. Final construction design proposal was developed with all the selected main details.

28. In the final step of designing the construction, it was really important to create a simulation of suitable passive air circulation during summer as well as winter season which will help to cut down the energy loses and makes the interior environment clean and healthy for sport activities. The concept idea included heat exchanger placed in the pool water balance basin to reduce the heat losses because of high specific heat capacity of water environment.
