The killing of 26 people, including 20 children, at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut has understandably shocked the nation, and details are just beginning to emerge about the shooter, Adam Lanza, a 20-year-old man who also murdered his mother. Events like these will surely 41 debates about gun control, or lead people to complain about American culture itself. Yet on the very same day, a 36-year-old Chinese man attacked 22 children with a knife at a primary school in China, 42 that there is a decisive factor with mass homicides that gets far less attention.

For all the disbelief and dismay, we actually know pretty well that most such events are (A) services (B) core (C) vulnerable (D) reopen (E) committed

(3)

43 by individuals with a particular set of features. School shooters have generally been found to 1) have a history of antisocial-personality traits, 2) suffer from mental illnesses such as depression or psychosis and 3) tend to obsess about how others, whether other

individuals or society at large, have 44 them. These individuals seethe with rage and hatred and misery, until they decide to lash out at others or a society they believe has done them great wrong. Mental health, as well as our failure to address it as a society, is at the 45 of these events.

Not all mass homicide perpetrators aim at schools, but schools do seem to be an unusually common target. People wonder why angry men (and an occasional woman) so often target innocent children who have done them no wrong. In the case of Sandy Hook, although early reports suggested that Lanza’s mother, Nancy Lanza, may have worked there, the school superintendent has since clarified that she was not a teacher or a substitute. In many other cases, there is no obvious connection. 46 the horror and great sadness that has descended over the nation, we have our answer. These perpetrators have lashed out against society in the most vicious way possible, causing the most pain that they could. That is the point of targeting a school.

Gun control may probably 47 one tool from the hands of potential perpetrators, but mass homicides occur in every part of the globe — Scotland, Norway, Germany, China. So while it may indeed be the right time to talk about gun control, as many are saying, it is also the right time to talk about mental health care in our country. Our country’s funding for mental-health 48 has only gotten worse since the 2008 recession. As the National Alliance on Mental Illness has been warning for some time, the existing level of funding is not

enough, so our nation has had trouble identifying and caring for the severely mentally ill. In my own clinical work, I’ve seen individuals I’ve identified as being potentially at risk for 49 criminal behavior because of their mental illness. Very often, there are simply few or no resources for them until they come to the attention of the criminal-justice system. But by leaving the mentally ill adrift to fend for themselves, we miss the opportunity to identify and treat some of these at-risk individuals before they escalate. Of course, neither gun control nor a well-funded mental-health system will prevent every mass homicide. But we leave ourselves — and more innocent children — 50 until we address both of those issues.

V. Reading Comprehension 24%

(A) Pepsi is one of the most popular drinks in the world, as this carbonated beverage can be found practically anywhere you go: restaurants, stores and vending machines. There are a variety of flavors of Pepsi like Pepsi Light, Pepsi Twist, and Pepsi Blue, just to name a few.

This refreshing drink was actually originally formulated to be a tonic for indigestion; incidentally the word “pepsi” means digestion in Greek. Pepsi, however, wasn’t called Pepsi at first but actually “Brad’s Drink,” named after Caleb D. Bradham from North Carolina who invented the formula.

Caleb Bradham was attending medical school when his father announced that his business was failing, so Caleb decided to drop out of school and open up his own pharmacy in order to help his father through hard times. Like most pharmacies during that era, it had a soda fountain where customers could refresh themselves with a drink while they waited to get their prescriptions filled.

Caleb Bradham devised a drink from carbonated water, sugar, vanilla, pepsin, and cola nuts and claimed that it would help relieve people’s indigestion. He served it from his soda fountain, and it became increasingly popular, which subsequently persuaded Caleb Bradham to try selling his beverage on the national market.

Changing the name to Pepsi-Cola and asking a neighbor to design the product’s logo, Caleb Bradham opened up bottling lines to package the drink and began advertising campaigns across the country. Unfortunately, World War I broke out. Then the Great

Depression swept across America and caused Caleb Bradham to go bankrupt. He was forced to sell his company in an auction.

Pepsi went through several hands of ownership, and different marketing strategies were executed in attempts to increase its popularity. However, it wasn’t until the Pepsi Challenge in 1975, where blind taste tests showed that people preferred Pepsi over Coke, causing sales of Pepsi to skyrocket and making it one of today’s leading beverages.

(B) There may be no more rewarding family activity than reading stories aloud. Besides providing hours of relaxing, educational fun, the act of sharing stories is certainly a child’s first step on the road to becoming a lifelong reader. But what to read? The library is full of wonderful books, but which ones are appropriate for your children? And where on Earth can you find stories of exactly the right length, suited to a child’s short attention span and designed to fit into those precious minutes before sleep-time?

This invaluable book -- the most comprehensive of its kind -- answers these questions once and for all, providing the widest possible range of read-aloud stories culled from a world of great children’s literature. The pieces have been selected with great care to represent a diversity of styles, cultures, and subject matter -- and to appeal to children of various ages. (Parents, too!)

Divided into user-friendly sections, the book ranges from fantastic tales to stories grounded in historical fact. A chapter called “Adventurous Kids” features Beverly Cleary’s irrepressible Ramon, the super-sleuth Encyclopedia Brown, and the pioneer family of Little House on the Prairie. “Animal Tales” includes adventures of the Black Stallion, Doctor Dolittle, and the wily beasts of The Jungle Book. “Incredible Journeys” comprises favorite moments from The Secret Garden, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and A Wrinkle in Time. And there’s so much more between these covers. Greek mythology, English fairytales, The Arabian Nights… all of your own favorites from childhood, along with such fine

contemporary writers as Judy Blume, F.L. Konigsberg, and Gary Paulsen.

And, having tasted the wonders of these great books, what if your children want the whole story? This book features a handy bibliographic note along with each selection, directing you to the available edition of the book from which it is drawn.

languages, been seen by more than 60 million people in 42 countries and launched untold thousands of high school productions.

Now the movie is going to be shown on Christmas Day. In the movie, all the singing is live, to the camera: no lip-synching, no overdubs. Wearing radio microphones hidden in their costumes, the actors sang to live piano accompaniment. Only after filming was the

orchestration added. According to the filmmakers, Les Miz is likely the first musical in movie history to pull this off.

Though the performances differed from take to take, the actors were still singing the same well-known, time-tested songs. The director Tom Hooper says he had doubted about the contemporary resonance of Les Miz: “Is it still relevant? The thing that struck me is that we’re still living at a time when a lot of people are hurting around the world because of economic and social inequity, and there’s tremendous anger about the system, just like what happened hundred years ago.”

“We live in a selfish age and we project various versions of ourselves.” Hooper says. “But you have to tell this story from the point of view that God exists. And what God means in practice is the act of compassion, the struggle of living your life in a moral way.” “Les Miz is the great anthem of the dispossessed,” Hooper says. “It offers this comfort that we as a collective can rise up against the system and change it for the better.”
