100th Exchange Agreement for HKUST Undergraduate
Business Students Signed with University of Virginia's
McIntire School of Commerce
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology’s School of Business and Management (HKUST Business School) and the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia today signed an agreement to launch a student exchange partnership program for undergraduate students.
This is the 100th student exchange partner for the HKUST Business School since it started its first exchange program with the University of Southern California in 1994.
Professor Roland Chin, HKUST Vice-President for Academic Affairs, Professor Leonard Cheng, Acting Dean of HKUST Business School, Professor Carl P. Zeithaml, McIntire School Dean, and Professor Michael Morris, McIntire School Associate Dean, were all present at today’s signing ceremony.
The partnership will allow undergraduate students from the two schools to send students to one another’s campuses for semester-long exchanges starting in the 2008-2009 academic year.
At the signing ceremony, Professor Roland Chin said, “We are delighted that the McIntire School of Commerce is our 100th partner. The McIntire School, founded in 1921, is part of the historic University of Virginia. The University was founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States. It has a wonderful heritage and is nestled in a beautiful location surrounded by the famous Blue Ridge Mountains. The School is currently ranked by BusinessWeek magazine as the No. 2 ‘Best Undergraduate Business School’ in the U.S. I am sure it will be one of the most popular exchange destinations for our students.”
Acting Dean Professor Leonard Cheng said, “International student exchange programs like the one we are launching with the McIntire School are very important to our goal of providing all our students with overseas experience as we gradually move to a four-year curriculum. In addition to joining student exchange programs, our students’ overseas experience can be enhanced through other activities such as study tours, international case competitions, community projects and internship opportunities outside of Hong Kong.” “The McIntire School is very excited about our new partnership with the HKUST Business School,” said McIntire Dean Carl P. Zeithaml. “Globalization is a major strategic initiative for the University of Virginia, and this alliance involving two of the best business schools in the world will provide outstanding opportunities for student exchange programs and collaborative faculty research in a dynamic region of the world. Our partnership with HKUST is cemented by a shared commitment to provide students with an education that prepares them to become international business leaders and outstanding global citizens. We look forward to many fruitful years of cooperation and friendship with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.” International student exchange programs are widely recognized as an effective way to increase students’ overseas experience and broaden their cultural awareness. They are considered an invaluable opportunity for academic and personal growth.
The HKUST Business School has been steadily growing its network of student exchange partners. At the undergraduate level, there are enough spaces for almost 60% of its students to join the exchange program. The international student exchange is one of the hallmarks of the overall learning experience for business students at the HKUST.
