Many popular expressions in English have interesting backgrounds. When we refer to a person’s weak spot 21 his Achilles’ heel, we are recalling the story of the might Greek hero of the Trojan War, Achilles, a warrior of unusual strength and courage. The mother of Achilles, in 22 veins flowed the blood of the gods, was warned at his birth that her son would die in battle. In great distress, she sought to save her son. In order to reduce his chance of being hurt and to give him maximum protection in battle, she dipped the infant in the river Styx. The magic waters touched every part of the child’s body 23 the heel that she held in her hand. Thus it happened many years 24 when he quarreled with the commander Agamemnon, and in anger sulked in his tent. Achilles then emerged to fight and killed the Trojan hero Hector, but he died shortly after he was wounded by a poisoned arrow in the heel, the only spot where he was vulnerable. For years, villagers believed that Endley farm was haunted. The farm was

New Belgian carrier Brussels Airlines had to change its 13-red-dot logo on the tail of all its planes because of a flood of complaints from passengers about the combination of the thirteen red balls representing bad luck. This number is unlucky in Western culture and many would-be passengers thought it just wouldn’t do on an airplane. Airline officials were taken aback by the volume of disapproving mail they received. Particularly upset was the original logo’s designer Ronane Holt. She said the thirteen dots “looked just right “and had extra significance because the number of dots matched the destinations it flew to Africa. The design, in the shape of “b”, also resembled the pattern of lights on an airport runway as planes taxied before taking off.

All of the airline’s planes now have to go back to their hangars for a paint job. A fourteenth red dot will be added to the top of the “b.” However, this may not go down well in China, where the number fourteen is unlucky. One-four in Mandarin sounds like the phrase “ to want to die”. Passengers at Brussels airport were in two minds as to whether or not they thought the fourteen-dot logo would bring better luck.

Frequent business flyer Rene Charles said: “ In this day and age, superstitions are little silly. There is no logic behind them. “ However, she did admit that she heard the concerns of other passengers and was happier that the newer logo has an extra dot.

Brussels Airlines is the result of a merger between SN Brussels Airlines and Virgin Express. It begins flying, with the fourteen dots, on March 25.

fashion. The crakow was a shoe with a very long tip, similar to a witch’s shoe. Nobody knew why women followed the fad of wearing such a strange type of shoe or why the tips of the shoes got a little longer every year. The crakow finally got so long that King Edward III ordered that the crakow not extend more than two inches beyond a human’s toes. The king’s order, however, was not obeyed. From birth, babies are very sensitive to their mothers’ feelings. If mothers are depressed in the very early weeks or months, this often has an effect on the interaction with the newborns. And this in turn has long-term harmful effects on the development of the children. They may have more behavioral problems, more cognitive problems, or a low IQ. So the very early mother-baby interaction is very important for the later development of the children, and a very stressed mother can interfere with this. Alternatively, the good news is that very good “mothering” early on can actually help to undo some of the possible damage that might have been caused during the fetal period. So, the whole system is very plastic both for benefit and harm in the very early period.

Based on the finding in the research, very early mothering is absolutely crucial. Perhaps women should take a bit of time off work, certainly in the early months, to make sure that they get a good relationship going with their babies. This has implications for society as a whole and governments that women should be given more time to establish the relationship with their children, and that they should be helped to be in as good an emotional state as possible. Politicians as well maybe have a role to play here. They ought to be aware that for the sake of the emotional health of future generations, encouraging mothering and parenting is very important.

People tend to live up to what’s expected of them and they tend to do better when treated as if they are capable of success. These are the lessons of the famous theory, the Pygmalion Effect. Pygmalion first appeared in Greek mythology as a king of Cyprus who carved and then fell in love with an ivory statue of a woman, which Aphrodite brought to life as Galatea. Much later, George Bernard Shaw wrote a play, entitled Pygmalion, about Henry Higgins ( a professor of phonetics ) and Lisa Doolittle ( the cockney flower girl whom Henry makes bets that he can change into a lady).

In 1968, Dr. Robert Rosenthal did the following experiments to test the validity of the

Pygmalion Effect. At an elementary school, teachers were given the names of students who had been identified as those with high intellectual abilities. The teachers were told to expect more from these students. In reality, the students were chosen at random. After eight months, however, the students who had been identified as the “brightest” did in fact have higher

increases in their achievements scores than those who had been identified as average. The high expectations of the teachers had resulted in higher achievement by the students. It is believed that the students were given more attention and that the teachers’ behaviors likely produced increased students’ confidence as well as a desire by students to study and do well.
