五、閱讀測驗(14%):

Do you feel anxious in a yellow room? Does the color blue make you feel calm and relaxed? Artists and interior designers have long understood how color can dramatically affect moods, feelings and emotions. It is a powerful communication tool and can be used to signal action, influence mood and cause physiological reactions. Certain colors can raise blood pressure, increase metabolism or cause eyestrain.

Studies have also shown that certain colors have an impact on performance. Exposing students to the color red prior to an exam has been shown to have a negative impact on test performance. More recently, researchers discovered that the color red causes people to react with greater speed and force, something that might prove useful during athletic activities.

While concepts of color can be subjective, researchers throughout history were still drawn to the study of colors, since there still are some color effects with universal meanings. They serve as the foundation of modern-day research on color psychology. Besides, ancient cultures such as the Egyptians and Chinese even practiced chromotherapy. That is, using colors to heal. In this treatment:

Yellow was thought to stimulate the nerves and purify the body.Orange was used to heal the lungs and to increase energy levels.Blue was believed to soothe illnesses and treat pain.

Indigo shades were thought to relieve skin problems.

Some psychologists are skeptical about color therapy and point out that the supposed effects of color have been exaggerated. Also, colors have different meanings in different cultures. For example, while the color white is used in many Western countries to represent purity and innocence, it is seen as a symbol of mourning in many Eastern countries. Moreover, research has demonstrated in many cases that the mood-changing effects of color may only be temporary. A blue room may cause feelings of calm at first, but the effect disappears after a short period of time.

When it comes to having perfect memory, sometimes we can’t help but wonder whether there’s some fault in our blueprints! Why do we humans simply don’t remember everything we want to remember? Indeed, we’re all forgetful. If we weren’t, diaries would never be kept, secretaries would never be hired, and the “smart phones” would not have been invented!

Most of us have vivid memories of our lives from about age three to our present ages. These are stored in what we call our “long-term memory.” According to Sigmund Freud, we forgot most of our early childhood. Psychologists disagree on what causes this amnesia, and the investigation has been going on since Freud’s time. A very good theory, born from the results of experiments with toddlers, is that lack of language ability at the time of an event stopped us from describing it to others. The memory exists in our minds, but words were not

associated with it when it happened. Therefore, it doesn’t become a subject in our adult autobiographies. The other type of memory, the “short-term memory,” is what we usually refer to when we say, “I forgot.” Experts say that you can keep about seven things in your memory at once for up to three days. During that time, you may forget something so that you can put something else in its place. Here’s a simple example to illustrate your short-term memory. Look at a list of twenty words for a minute or two. You’ll discover that you can’t remember more than about seven of the words and that they are the ones in the beginning and at the end of the list because your mind judged them to be more important than those in the middle.

58. What does the word “amnesia” in the second paragraph mean? (A) Memory skill.

(B) Memory experiment. (C) Memory loss.

(D) Memory storage.

59. What can we infer from the article? (A) Younger people have better memory.

(B) A catchy phrase or slogan had better contain more than 7 words. (C) Adult autobiographies always start with the first year of their lives. (D) Many devices are invented to solve people’s memory problems.

[A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.]---Proverbs 17:17

A lot of people go through life with only a few friends, and some even have less than that. They have no one on whom they can call in good times or bad. There is no one with whom to bounce ideas around. They have no one to call in times of need or difficulty or to talk about deep and troubling subjects.

Others, however, have a multitude of friends. Wherever they go, people know them, and like to be around them. Should trouble strike, their biggest hesitation might be over which friend to call. They know exactly the person with whom to discuss the topics of inquiry and debate. Life of this kind of people is full of entertaining and invigorating relationships because there are many friends.

Of course, some people are perfectly happy to operate with fewer friends. They might rather have a few deep and loyal friends than many superficial ones. Others thrive best when friends are everywhere and numerous. It is not so much the number of friends that is important as the possession of friends.

Friendship is a blessing, and a friend is the channel through whom great emotional, spiritual and sometimes even physical blessings flow. Friends can cheer us when we are sorrowful or depressed. Friends can challenge us when we allow ourselves to get beyond our reasonable boundaries. Friends can motivate us when we are ready to give in, and they can provide for us when life falls apart. They are there when all is well, and we want someone with whom to share life’s pleasant and memorable moments. We often just want them around to have a good time, to laugh, to act silly, to enjoy some mutually liked activity.
