17th International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO) for Primary School Students (Virtual Edition)

20 – 24 January 2021 Host Country – Indonesia

Guidelines, Timelines and Reminders

A. Board Resolution:

The IMSO Executive Council, in a resolution approved en masse, has approved to hold the 17th International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO) for Primary School Students in January 2021. The council resolution is a result of the appeal from some member countries to hold the said contest online due to several travel restrictions and strict health and safety protocols imposed by many countries to curb infection of COVID19.

B. Competition Date:

20 to 24 January 2021

D. Organizing Committee:

• Indonesia – In-Charge of the Online Platforms (Interaction Networks, Technology Platform), Certificates, Communication

• Taiwan – In-charge of the Technical Operations of Math Division • Philippines – In-charge of Technical Operations of Science Division

E. Participants and Officials:

1. Each participating country is allowed to nominate • 6 participants for the Math competition; • 6 participants for the Science competition,

• 12 participants for each division – a privilege granted to former host countries: Indonesia, India, Philippines, Thailand, China, Singapore and Vietnam

2. The participants of the Olympiad are grade V, VI or level F students, and not older than 13 years of age before 21 January 2021. Participants should be chosen through a selection process. 3. Each country is required to nominate a Team Leader who shall be responsible for

communicating with the organizing committee, managing and making online platform. possible at home, and attending virtual conference. The Team Leader shall also nominate a math tutor and science tutor.

4. Registration is FREE for all the countries that send students in accordance to the allowable number of participants. For an additional/extra participants shall pay a registration fee of USD $100 per participant.

F. Contest Problem Proposals:

1. Each participating must submit 2 sets of proposed questions to the organizing committee: 1 set (9 questions) for Mathematics Division and 1 set (9 questions) for Science Division on or before the deadline stated above.

• For Mathematics, there should be a set of 4 questions for Theoretical Test 1 (1 mark

each), 3 questions for Theoretical Test 2 (3 marks each), and 2 questions for Exploration with Mathematics (6 marks each).

• For Science, the set should have 4 multiple-choice questions (1 mark each), 4

open-ended questions (3 marks each) and 1 problem for the experiment test (12 marks).

2. Instructions and questions will be in English. All answers must be in English; G. Health and Safety Protocols:

1. It will be the duties and responsibilities of each participating country to adhere to the health and safety protocols being imposed in their respective country during the competition.

2. The team leader must see to it that all participants, in case they are gathered in one place, must observe social distancing and other health protocols required from every citizen in the respective country.

H. Online Competition Guidelines:

1. Each participating team will compete in their own country (or region).

2. The competitions for both mathematics and science divisions shall be held on 21~22 January 2021.

3. The 17th IMSO 2020 is an individual competition. The questions consist of 3 parts for each subject:

● Short Answer, Theoretical and Exploration questions for Mathematics; and ● Short Answer, Theoretical and Experimental questions for Science.

4. It is a must that Team Leaders arrange webcams during the competitions to provide a live feed of the examinations to the Organizing Committee.

5. It should be noted that any expenses associated with hiring of facilities and other amenities for the virtual contest is the responsibility of all participating countries tasked to ensure a conducive and safe contest venue.

6. All contest problems for both divisions shall be sent to the team leaders 12 hours before the start of the contest.

7. After each examination, the team leader must scan all contest papers and send the scanned copies to the organizing committees for checking.

8. Participants are not allowed to bring books, scientific dictionaries, calculators, and other electronic devices during the contest. However, they may bring a hard copy English dictionary with them.

9. Since this is a virtual contest, the team leader should see to it that the internet connection is excellent and that the live feed is uninterrupted.

10. All participants for both divisions must be on their sit or post an hour before the contest starts for checking of attendance and other preliminary preparations.

11. Prior to the actual contest, there will be testing of communications and clarifications of protocols to make sure online IMSO event shall be smooth and orderly.

I. Meeting of Team Leaders:

1. The Organizing Committee will call two or three virtual meetings of all team leaders to discuss important matters on procedures, technical details and protocols.

2. There will be no virtual Jury meetings. Any decisions that should be taken by the Jury, such as approval of problems, approval of marking schemes, will be made by the Organizing Committee that may call video meeting at their discretion.

3. The results, as well as marking scheme, will be released to team leaders after the jury has evaluated or appreciated the solutions/ answers of the participants during the moderation time. I. Scoring and Evaluation:

1. Juries score the answers and the results are submitted to the team leaders for the tutors/trainers of each team to review.

2. Tutors/trainers through their team leader are allowed to respond to the juries’scoring results through moderation.

3. Juries will announce the winners based on the scoring results. The winners are decided by the percentages of correct answers.

J. Medals and Awards:

1. There will be NO MEDALS to be distributed this year ONLY Gold, Silver and Bronze Certificates thru a link which will be provided by the organizing committee. A certificate of participation shall be distributed to non-winners.

2. There will be a virtual awarding programs after three to five days of the competition. K. Additional Important Reminders:

1. Each participating country/region must prepare 3 to 5 minutes to introduce its delegates for use at the opening ceremony on January 21, 2021.

2. There are also 3 to 5 minutes intermission performances (such as dancing, singing, etc.) for cultural presentations.

7. Classifying organisms: based on their food, anatomy, systematics, reproduction system and its habitat.
