Samsung and HKUST unleash potential of young innovators

for creating a better digital lifestyle

Hong Kong, December 10, 2007 – More than 50 undergraduates from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) showed off their prowess for technology innovation and creativity with gadgets they designed to enter the “Pioneering a New Digital Lifestyle with Samsung – Smart Gadgets Competition 2007”.

The students from the School of Engineering (SENG) comprised 19 teams and had participated in the “Pioneering a New Digital Lifestyle with Samsung – Smart Gadgets Competition 2007”, the university’s first electronic design competition for students sponsored by Samsung that challenges students’ creativity of inventing their digital lifestyle. The competition started on 18 October 2007, and the participating teams shared with a panel of judges the innovative designs they worked on and benefits they bring to users. Four finalist teams were then shortlisted and demonstrated the product prototypes and their functions in today’s final presentation and answered questions from the judging panel.

The Display Box 360 (DBOX360) team – Chan Tsz Sau, Lo Fu Kin and Chan Wing Yee from year three of SENG emerged as the champion team in the competition. The winning team intended to produce a 360-degree wide projection of text and graphics by spinning a set of configured LEDs at high speed. The resulting projection acts as a text floating in the air. The prototype also supports text sliding and blinking.

“Samsung and the School of Engineering (at HKUST) share the same vision for creating a better global society through technological innovation,” says BW Kim, managing director, Samsung Electronics Hong Kong. “That vision will be pursued by our younger generation and Samsung is committed to working with educators like HKUST in the long run to help foster the creativity and skills of our future digital-lifestyle pioneers.” "The School of Engineering strives to provide a nurturing environment for young engineering students to develop their skills and grow,” says Professor Paul Ching-Wu Chu, president of HKUST. “As part of that effort, we are keen to work with the private sector to give our students hands-on experience that will benefit their education and future career prospects. Today’s competition is a shining example of the success of this approach.”

“This competition has been a great learning experience for all of us,” says Chan Tsz Sau of Display Box 360 (DBOX360) team. “As engineering students it is vital that we realize our dreams by putting what we learn into practice and get real product design experience. And, to have our project recognized by a
