The uncanny valley is a hypothesis regarding the field of robotics. The theory holds that when robots or other copies of humans look and act almost like actual humans, it causes a response of revulsion among observers.

The term was coined by a roboticist Masahiro Mori. Mori states that as a robot is made ever-increasingly humanlike in its appearance and motion, the emotional response from an individual to the robot will become increasingly positive and empathic, until a point is reached beyond which the response quickly becomes that of strong disgust. However, as the

appearance and motion continue to become less distinguishable from an individual, the emotional response becomes positive once more and approaches human-to-human empathy levels.

The truth of the uncanny valley was examined with one recent study. A group of five monkeys were shown three images: two different 3D monkey faces, including a realistic one and an unrealistic one, and a real photo of a monkey's face. The time of eye-gazing was used as a proxy for the result. Since the realistic 3D monkey face had been looked for less time P2

than the others, this indicated that the monkey participants found the realistic 3D face aversive, or otherwise preferred the other two images.

The concept of the uncanny valley is taken seriously by the film industry due to negative audience reactions to the animated humans. To avoid the uncanny valley as much as possible, animators will take some measures. For example, design elements should match in human realism. That is to say, if an animated character looks more human than its movement, this gives a negative impression. Animated humans may look uncanny when human and nonhuman elements are mixed, which are what animators must subside so that they can ensure most of the audience a pleasant experience of going to the movies.

(D)To solve the uncanny valley problem, animators try their best to balance animated humans’ actions and looks.

Freerice is a free online game and learning tool, which allows players to raise rice to fight world hunger while learning through educational, multiple-choice games. For every question the user answers correctly, 10 grains of rice are donated to the World Food Programme.

The ingenious idea behind Freerice came to John Breen as he was trying to help his son

study for the SAT, a college entrance exam in America. A computer programmer, Breen developed a computer-based, multiple-choice quiz to help his son build vocabulary. The quiz is designed to adjust to the user’s vocabulary level so that questions are challenging yet not too difficult. Breen, also passionate about ending world hunger, soon realized that putting the quiz online could aid this important cause.

Currently, besides English vocabulary, the available subjects include multiplication tables, pre-algebra, chemical symbols, English grammar, SAT, basic foreign language vocabulary for English speakers, human anatomy, geography, the identification of famous artwork, and literature. Total score is displayed as a mound of rice and the amount of grains.

One month after the start of the viral marketing program, users had earned enough points for one billion grains of rice. The United Nation’s World Food Program stated that this amount could feed 50,000 people for one day, since it takes 400 grams or about 19,200 grains of rice to feed one adult for a day. Using this calculation, enough rice was donated in 2008 to feed over 6,000 people daily for each day of that year. Since its operation, as of April 3, 2013, Freerice players had earned sufficient rice for over 10 million meals, assuming 2 meals per day. Since players are constantly clicking, Freerice can feed about 100 families of four each day if we get 6 million grains of rice every day.

58. What is the article mainly about?

(A) A website that raises environmental awareness. (B) An organization that advocates racial equality. (C) An online game that aims to end world hunger.

(D) An institute that helps increase rice production. 59. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the article?

(A) The falling of Freerice. (B) The content of Freerice. (C) The accomplishment of Freerice. (D) The origin of Freerice. 60. About Freerice, which of the following is NOT true?

(A) Players with good geographical knowledge can score high.

(B) Players have to be great foreign language leaners to get grains of rice.

(C) Players can use it to prepare for the US college entrance exam. (D) The total score a player gets is shown as a pile of rice.

61. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?

(A) One billion grains of rice is enough to feed 60,000 people for one day. (B) It takes about 400 grains of rice to feed one adult for a day.

(C) Rice donated in 2008 was sufficient for over 10 million meals.

(D) It takes 6 million grains of rice to feed about 100 families of four each day.

Yesterday you had a hard day at work. As you were walking out of the office, a colleague approached you and started to attack the way you did things. You felt like your blood

pressure had hit the roof. What the colleague said had pushed your buttons and you immediately replied with an equal amount of sarcasm and abuse, which made the situation worse. Before you knew it, you were involved in a verbal fight.

In fact, what you experienced was an “amygdala hijack.” The amygdala is the “fight or flight” and emotional memory part of the brain. Its job is to protect you by comparing incoming data with emotional memories. An amygdala hijack happens when you respond P3

(4)

excessively to the actual threat because it has triggered a much more significant emotional threat. When you experience an amygdala hijack, the amygdala overtakes the cerebrum (the thinking part of the brain) and you lose the ability to reason logically. The immediate result of a hijack is a decrease in working memory. Adrenaline is released and will be present and effective for 18 minutes, and other hormones are released into the bloodstream that will take 3 to 4 hours to clear.

The simple 4 steps to reduce the chance of an amygdala hijack are SOAP:

(1) Stop. Stop whatever you’re doing. Ask yourself what just happened. Replace your thoughts with positive ones. This step keeps the neocortex, a part of the brain, engaged and can prevent the amygdala’s takeover.

(2) Oxygenate. Breathe deeply, with intention and purpose.

(3) Appreciate. While it’s especially effective to appreciate the source of the hijack (i.e. appreciating the colleague is concerned about your job), any appreciation of anything will be helpful. If you can’t appreciate the person who is the source of the conflict, appreciate parts of your own life, such as your family and friends.

(4) Ponder. After the hijack, spend some time exploring what happened and why. Recognizing the trigger will allow you to avoid being triggered in the future.

62. In the first paragraph, “what the colleague said had pushed your buttons” means what the colleague said had _______ you.

(A) encouraged (B) cheated (C) irritated (D) flattered 63. Which of the following is NOT one part of the brain?

(A) Neocortex (B) Adrenaline (C) Amygdala. (D) Cerebrum.

64. Which of the following is NOT the recommended way to reduce the chance of an amygdala hijack?

(A) Thank your family. (B) Take a deep breath. (C) Reflect on what happened. (D) Think negatively.

65. Which of the following statement about the amygdala hijack is WRONG? (A) When encountering verbal abuse, you are likely to experience amygdala hijack.

(B) It may happen when you over-react to the actual threat. (C) When you experience it, you will become more rational.

(D) A decrease in working memory is the instant result of it. V. Translations: 13%
