Do you know how much money Taiwan makes selling plants and flowers to foreign countries? It earns about NT$6 billion every year. If you are curious about how flowers can bring in so much money, visiting an international flora exposition might help you find the answer.

The first of this kind of garden festival was held in the Netherlands in 1960. Taipei was lucky enough to hold an international flora exposition in 2010, and now Taiwan has the honor of holding another one. From November 3, 2018 to April 24, 2019, Taichung is hosting the World Flora Exposition.

There are three park areas that give visitors an exciting and educational experience. In the

Houli Horse Ranch & Forest Park Area, everyone must visit the Blossom Pavilion. There, master artists from around the world show off their flora works in a friendly competition. People can learn everything about orchids in Orchid Hall, which also tells the story of how Taiwan became the “kingdom of orchids.” In the Waipu Park Area, everyone must stop by the Harvest Blessings Pavilion and take in the stories of Taiwan’s farmers and its four important crops of rice, tea, fruit, and mushrooms. Finally, people should go to the Fengyuan Huludun Park Area to see the beautiful Bamboo Pavilion, whose appearance is similar to that of Taiwan’s Central Range. There is so much more to see and do in these areas. Everyone should visit the 2018 Taichung

World Flora Exposition before it’s too late.

Fast food restaurants in New York are the best in the world. I have been there three times. Ashley: I have no idea about foreign countries, but I like to eat Japanese food. When I was

young, my parents often took me to a Japanese restaurant near my house. I always had lots of sushi there. I hope one day I can take a trip to Japan.

Toby: South Korea is always my favorite country. There are so many singers in the South Korea. For example, G Dragon is one of the most famous singers from Korea. When I first went there at thirteen, I saw him standing next to me. It was the happiest moment in my life.

Kelly: My family are in Thailand. The food is yummy and cheap. People are friendly there. My mom and I like to go shopping in the department store of Bangkok. Those fashion items are not expensive, even in the department store. My dad likes to play golf there. And the Thai massage is a must-do.

In Taiwan, most of us are used to learning new things in the classroom with teachers teaching in the front and writing on the blackboard. However, schooling is going through a great number of changes these days. Students don’t just learn new things in the classroom any more. Take Kirton School, an elementary in Boston for example. It has its own bank. Students in Kieton School get a special kind of money called Kirts by doing well on the tests or working in the school bank. All students can buy what they want from Kirton Store: from pencils and erasers to robots and Teddy bears. The school believes that Kirts, the money, and the school bank can help their students be smart with their own financial condition. By setting up its own school bank, Kirton School tries to teach their students why it is important to make, use or save money. Students in another school, The Deep Green Bush School in New Zealand, get their knowledge in a different way. In fact, the Deep Green Bush School doesn’t have any classrooms. Students in the school have no tables to write or chairs to sit on. Homework? It doesn’t mean anything to students in this school. Math and other subjects? Students are free to learn them, but they are not forced. Teachers in the school believe that nature is the best classroom for the students. They learn how to hunt fish and live in the forest. They also get knowledge about plants they meet. By teaching things like these, the teachers believe their students might learn how to find the key to their own problem when they have one. There is no best way to get knowledge. But one thing will never change: knowledge is power. Keep learning at any time and any place. 57. What does the word financial in the first part mean?

(A) Anything about nature. (B) School rules.

(C) Something to do with money. (D) A new way to learn things.

58. Which of the four may be the diary of a student from Deep Green Bush School?

(A) Simon: Mr. Wilson taught us how to catch fish in the river today. The weather was so fine in the day. It started raining in the evening, and we slept right next to a big tree. (B) Nicky: We went fishing this morning. However, it started to rain at about eleven, so we

had to go back to school early. We stayed in the classroom and studied math all afternoon.

(C) Brian: We had a bad day. Although it was fun to have class outside, my bottom hurts after sitting on the hard stone for too long. Luckily, Miss Finkel said that the tables and chairs would be sent back next week.

(D) Andy: I saw a lot of butterflies when we went mountain climbing this morning. I’ll write them down in details in my writing homework this evening.

(E)

Is it difficult for you to wake up in the early morning? Do you need two cups of coffee before you can start a new day? Do you feel bad when you wake up? Scientist said that it’s all because of our genes. They interviewed 500 people, and asked them questions about their lifestyles, for example, what time of day they like to exercise and how difficult they found it to wake up in the early morning. Scientists then compared their answers to the people’s DNA.

They found that we all have a “clock gene”, also called the Period 3 gene. This gene can be long or short. People who have the long genes are usually energetic in the morning, but get tired easily at night. Instead, with the short genes, they have problems waking up in the early morning, but are usually active at night.

How can we know if we have the long or short genes? Scientists said that we can change our working hours to fit our “body clock”. If you are a “morning person”, then you could start your work early and finish it early. But if you are bad in the morning, then it might be better to start to work in the afternoon and work until late at night.

59. What can we learn from the reading?

(A) Waking up early in the morning is difficult for everyone.

(B) Not everyone that has trouble getting up in the morning is lazy. (C) Coffee plays an important part in our lives.

(D) Scientists believe that genes have nothing to do with our lifestyles. 60. Which is NOT true about the “clock gene”?

(A) It’s also called the Period 3 gene. (B) It can be long or short.

(C) It decides whether we are active in the morning or at night. (D) People without it might get sick easily.

61. I’m a sleeping monster in the morning. It’s really hard to wake me up in the morning. Even after I get up, I still feel tired. I don’t know why I can’t work in the morning.

This is what a man said in an interview. According to the above reading, what can he do? (A) He can ask the doctor to change his gene.

(B) He should try to change his “body clock”. (C) He had better change his working hours.
