Memorizing English vocabulary is boring for most Taiwanese students. But what if memorizing vocabulary can be a contribution to world hunger? Perhaps the academic motivation of students would be stronger. FreeRice.com, a website founded by John Breen, does offer the opportunity for ESL (English as a second language) students to enrich English vocabulary and fight against world hunger simultaneously. When you go visit the home page of FreeRice.com, a simple quiz pops up with four definitions, and only one of them is correct. If you give the correct answer, the website congratulates you and gives you a new quiz. If you give the wrong answer, then the website displays the correct definition together with a new quiz. The difficulty of the quizzes will be raised if you answer several quizzes in a row correctly. Besides, for each correct answer you give, FreeRice donated 10 grains of rice to the U.N. World Food Program. Therefore, the more correct answers you give, the more grains of rice you earn for hungry individuals in poor countries around the world.

The fabulous idea behind FreeRice.com comes from John Breen, whose son was preparing for the SAT, a college entrance exam in America. In order to help him in memorizing vocabulary, Breen decided to build a computer-based and

(4)

multiple-choice quiz website. Breen was also passionate for solving world hunger. Then, the great idea came to his mind— the two elements should be combined! In 2007, he created FreeRice.com and cooperated with the U.N. Word Food Program. To date, over 1 million kilograms of rice has been donated.

Today, it even offers users other subjects to learn, including Math, Humanities, Language learning, and so forth. To increase its popularity, it has designed its own logo in the form of electric files for users to download. Users can download and print it out as a poster, or use it as the cover of any social media. If you are a teacher, you can even download the evaluation sheet it has designed for students. So what are you waiting for? It’s high time for you to visit it!

The EU, the Europe Union, is a politico-economic union of 28 members that are located primarily in Europe. As the most prominent global union in the Europe, it has been expected to solve every European problem. However, Italy’s illegal migration problem has made the EU in a trouble.

Italy, the nearest European country from North Africa, now is in face of the increasing illegal migrants from North Africa. Because it’s dangerous for illegal migrants to take overcrowded boats across the sea, out of humanity, the Italian government spends its own money to found an operation called Mare Nostrum, whose aim is to search and rescue the illegal migrants from North Africa on the sea. Recently, with the expansion of the number of migrants, the expense on the operation has getting higher and higher sharply. To solve the financial problem, the Italian government has requested assistance from the EU. However, EU’s 27 other members chose to ignore the plea. Mare Nostrum program is now winding down. On the other hand, as a result of its ignorance, the EU has suffered criticism from human right organizations from all over the world. Under the pressure of humanitarianism, the EU has initiated a new operation named Operation Triton. Yet, the budget and the efficiency of Operation Triton is only a third of Mare Nostrum, which caused more lives of migrants to be claimed and more worldwide criticism.

Because of the issue, the reputation of the EU has decreased sharply. Some experts suggest the EU to turn the attention back to the root of the migration problem. What attracts illegal migrants is a stable work and life in Europe which their countries cannot afford them. The appropriate approaches to solve the problem are a resettlement of migrants and an establishment of a perfect system for the migrants to apply for European jobs in their home nations. That would lessen the desperation that pushes people to take to the sea and truly settle the trouble of the EU as well.
