Sunlight is good for humans. Direct contact with the light helps our bodies to produce vitamin D, which in turn strengthens our bones. It can also help battle a form of depression known as seasonal affective disorder. But what do you do if the sun is hidden behind the clouds, or its light doesn’t quite make it over the mountaintop? You install mirrors. At least that’s what the Norwegian industrial town of Rjukan did.

For Rjukan residents, sunlight is a rare thing. In fact, the sun hides behind gray clouds for five months of the year, making winter one of the dreariest times for Rjukan residents. To battle this, the town installed several mirrors on the nearby mountain of Gaustatoppen. The mirrors are controlled by computers, and are angled in such a way that the reflected light is projected onto the town square. The residents seem to enjoy the light, as the square has become a popular hangout during winter.

Strangely enough, the concept for the project came from the mind of Rjukan’s founder more than a century ago. Unfortunately for him and the people back then, the technology to do this did not exist. But thanks to modern computers, nearly everything is possible, including brightening people’s day by moving giant mirrors atop a mountain.

Some people will do anything for love, including building a 6,000-step staircase in the mountains. That’s what a Chinese man named Liu Guojiang did for his wife, Xu Chaoqing. The couple’s romantic story began over 50 years ago. Liu was 19 years old at the time and he fell in love with Xu. She was ten years older than he was and already had children. Back then, it was socially unacceptable for a man to love an older woman, and many of Liu’s friends and relatives criticized him. But that wouldn’t impede Liu and Xu from loving each other. Instead, they went to live by themselves on a high mountain in southwest China to get away from the naysayers.

Liu and Xu found life on the mountain to be tough at first. To make it easier for his wife to get up and down the mountain, Liu carved a long staircase, one step at a time. This difficult task took him over half a century to complete. But he did finish it, and now there are 6,000 steps leading to the couple’s humble home on the mountain.

The couple lived happily together on the mountain until Liu died in 2007. According to one of their seven children, they didn’t spend a single day apart. And the local government decided to preserve the love ladder and their home as a museum, so others can learn their lovely story.

But what if one of those errors costs you money? Many corporations have suffered devastating financial losses due to typos. Here are a few of the big ones.

Macy’s, a department store in the US, printed some ads for a sale. One of the items listed in the advertisement was a diamond bracelet valued at US$1,500 on sale for US$47. The deeply discounted item should have cost consumers US$497, but a missing number cost the retailer US$450 for each bracelet sold.

A car dealership in the US state of New Mexico wanted to drum up some business, so it contracted a marketing company to create scratch tickets to promote the dealership and offer cash prizes. The grand prize was US$1,000 cash. The marketing company printed 50,000 grand prize tickets. Everyone was a winner. The dealership couldn’t pay everyone; instead it offered coupons to a grocery store.

Although these errors cost the companies involved quite a bit of money, the most expensive typo in history belongs to NASA. A missing symbol in the coordinates of Mariner 1, called an overbar (¯¯), caused the rocket to fly off course. Mission control had no choice but to blow up Mariner 1 before losing contact with it permanently. The mistake cost NASA US$80 million.

Typos are unfortunate, but they can happen. Be sure to double-check your writing so you can avoid a catastrophic error that’ll cost you a fortune or even employment.

74. What was the correct discounted price for the diamond bracelet on sale in Macy’s? (A) US$1,500. (B) US$497. (C) US$450. (D) US$47.

75. What mistake did the marketing company mentioned in the third paragraph make? (A) It offered US$50,000 as the grand prize.

(B) It made a typo with the prices of cars in the advertisement. (C) It made every scratch ticket a winner of US$1,000.

(D) It offered coupons instead of scratch tickets to customers.

76. Which of the following is TRUE about the most expensive typo in history? (A) It was made by a car dealership.

(B) It resulted in a loss of US$8 billion.

(C) It had to do with a satellite named Mariner 1. (D) It resulted from the omission of a symbol.

77. Which of the following means the same as the phrase “drum up” in the third paragraph? (A) Attract. (B) Invent. (C) Reduce. (D) Award.

VII. 翻譯 (請書寫於答案卷上,一題兩分) 78. 鈴聲一響,大批學生就湧進教室。
