Warmest welcome to new President
An electrically charged new era dawns as the University hails the arrival of its second President, Prof Paul Ching-Wu Chu, who assumed office on 1 July.
President Chu, a world expert in superconductivity, has been courted by
many universities keen to acquire his talents. However, only HKUST and the exciting times that lie ahead in its second decade succeeded in persuading him to exchange the Lone Star state of Texas and the University of Houston, where he had worked for over 20 years, for
the bright lights of the SAR.
“Coming to Hong Kong gives me a sense of home-coming,” says President Chu, who was born in China and whose parents are Cantonese. The University community is proud and happy to say: “Welcome back!”
F
rom distinguished lectures and schol arly gatherings to parties, cultural exchanges and photographic exhibi-tions—the 10th anniversary celebrations offer something for ever yone in the immediate HKUST community, and much for our friends and supporters too.Highlights in the University’s cultural and social calendar since the official launch of the festivities on 23 April have included: a special 10th Anniversary Alumni–Students Confluence (24 April); music, dance and drama perfor-mances by the Nanjing University Arts Group (24 to 26 April); an
International Student Gala (4 May); and Le French May Photo Exhibition: Eloge de l’Avenir (Celebrating the Future—French Industry at the Be-ginning of the Third Millennium; 23 May to 8 June).
At the academic level, we have been kept on our toes by renowned scholars flown in from top US and British universities
to deliver 10th Anniversary Distinguished Lectures. The series kicked off on 2 April with a talk by neuroscientist Prof Zach Hall of the University of California at San Francisco. He was followed by Prof Malcolm Bolton of the University of Cambridge (3 April); modern China expert Prof Andrew Walder of Stanford University (2 May); post-colonial theorist Prof Gayatri Spivak of Columbia University

Forging new ties with Peking University
T
o be the best, work with the best. This philosophy, carved from day one into the Clear Water Bay outlook, has seen the University link up with many internationally renowned institutions to mutually enhance learning and research opportunities. Now a ser ies of far-sighted init iatives are strengthening ties between HKUST and the prestigious Peking University (PKU), assist ing the de velopment of b ot h universities, the Hong Kong Bay area and beyond. This fall, the universities join forces to launch two pioneering programs: an MD-Ph D, r u n i n con ju nc t i on w it h t he groundbreaking PKU-HKUST Shenzhen Medical Center; and an International Executive MBA at the new PKU-HKUST Shenzhen-Hong Kong Research Institution.
Training biomedical researchers
The MD-PhD program offers the healthy prospect of creating the Chinese leaders of tomorrow in the medical field. The University’s strong teaching and research in life sciences and biomedical areas make it the ideal place for top medical students at PKU to undertake PhDs before finishing their clinical studies at the Shenzhen Medical Center or PKU. As HKUST does not have its own medical school, this partnership allows it to help, and grow from, the discoveries of first-rate researchers in the field.
“This type of MD-PhD program has been most successful in the United States,
producing the best f u t u r e m e d i c a l researchers. That is our goal too,” says Prof Michael Loy, HKUST’s Dean of Science. The initial i n t a k e w i l l b e between five and seven students. The Shenzhen Medical Center, a partnership of the Shenzhen Municipal Government, PKU and HKUST, will
strive to offer advanced education for medical and life science professionals, develop and commercialize world-class R&D, and provide top quality health-care services.
“It is an exciting project and a very significant one for HKUST to be involved in,” says Prof Y M Shum, a vice-director of the Center and the University’s representative for the initiative. “There is no medical center in Hong Kong or the Chinese Mainland in the sense of the University of California San Francisco Medical Center or the Washington University Medical Center in the US. The Shenzhen Medical Center, as planned, will be the first of its kind in China.”
Prof Loy adds: “Such collaborations use complementary strengths from all parties to bring about something that none can achieve alone.”
Equipping Chinese executives
HKUST’s School of Business and Management and PKU’s Guanghua School of Management will launch an International Executive MBA (IEMBA) program in September. Aimed at senior executives in the Mainland, the program provides companies with the opportunity to capitalize on their corporate talent. It is modeled on the successful Kellogg-HKUST EMBA that has attracted high-flyers from around Asia with its weekend module structure and top faculty. “We are enthused about operating in the Mainland and believe the partnership model is the best. We are happy to partner with such a prestigious institution as Peking University. Students will have the advantage of learning from two top schools in the region and will become alumni of both,” says Prof K C Chan, Acting Dean of the School of Business and Management.
The program is designed for senior Chinese executives with a bachelor’s degree and at least 10 years of post-graduation work experience, including five years at middle to senior level management. Initial recruitment focuses on Shenzhen and nearby cities, but in the long term executives from other parts of the Mainland will be targeted, boosting management skills throughout the country. A first intake of at least 35 students is planned. Classes will be held in the building of the PKU-HKUST Shenzhen-Hong Kong Institution, when it is ready for use in 2002, and hotel venues will be used in the meantime. Residential courses will also be held at both HKUST and PKU as part of the program.
These enterprising ventures, along with earlier arrangements for joint research, student recruitment programs and adjunct professors, add up to a relationship between HKUST and PKU that is certainly going places. For when the north and south come together, the direction set must be an innovative one.

Finding the path
○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ong Kong will not die!” proclaimed
Dr Eden Woon, Director of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, in his keynote speech launching the Pathfinders 2001 career education program on 2 June.
Over 80 students, alumni and staff learned f rom Dr Wo on t hat Hong Kong is irreplaceable in spite of competition from other Chinese cities, and will continue to contribute to the economic growth of China even more after China enters the World Trade Organization. According to Dr Woon, Hong Kong’s strength lies in three areas. First, it can provide international professional business services in law, accounting, marketing and public relations. Second, it is a financial center with international connections and a mature infrastructure. Third, it is a digital center where the international community will feel at home with their information technology. Dr Woon further outlined how university students could prepare themselves for the career opportunities unfolded by the economic developments in China.
As the second part of their career preparation, the student “pathfinders” took part in a clinic on application letters and résumé writing. Student counselors from the HKUST Career Center used samples submitted by the students beforehand for review and instruction.
HKUST graduates in demand
Next on the menu was an experience-sharing lunch party with 35 alumni known as Honorary Advisors in Career Education (Hon ACEs). Mentoring provided by those who have already trodden their career paths is highly valued by those who plan to take their first steps. Prof Yuk-Shee Chan, Acting Vice-President for Academic Affairs, affirmed the contribution of the alumni in his speech and presentation of certificates.
Lunch was followed by an interview workshop where participants split into small groups so that the Hon ACEs could talk about their experiences of career planning in greater
detail and conduct mock inter v iews w ith the student pathfinders.
The Saturday pro-gram set the stage for a series of company visits and management skills training modules during the following week. The pathfinders participated in half-day programs of-fered by employers such as Dun & Bradstreet, Ernst &Young, Exel and Merrill Lynch. Such on-site input and exposure have reinforced the learning of the students.
Pathfinders is an annual career education program. It was launched by the Student Affairs Office in 1993. Although it has gone through revisions in format, it remains a favorite for students who want to take advantage of an intensive lear ning opportunity at the beginning of their summer break. It has also consolidated the HKUST culture of cooperation between student counselors, alumni and employers. The confluence of their contributions has influenced the career paths of HKUST students for almost a full decade.
S
tudents wondering what to expect after graduation can take heart—they’re in demand. The Report on Graduate Employment Survey 2000 prepared by Shirley Choi, Executive Officer with HKUST’s Career Center, has good news for graduates.Compared with 1999, the 2000 crop of graduates attracted more and better paid jobs—and the offers came in faster. Economic resurgence and the technology revolution are both underpinning the job market for graduates despite a slight rise in Hong Kong’s unemployment rate last year.
The median basic salary rose 10% to HK$11,000 in 2000. Of the graduates surveyed, 71.6% got more than one offer (up from 66% in 1999), 43.4% got more than two (36.8% in 1999) and 21.5% got more than three (16.8% in 1999). And by August 2000, 92.2% of graduates surveyed had received their first job offer (82.9% in 1999).
The survey found that in 2000, 87.1% of the full-time employed graduates were taking up jobs requiring a bachelor’s degree as the minimum qualification (83.9% in 1999), suggesting that it’s a tough market for job-seekers without tertiary qualifications.
“Our graduates are highly sought after in the IT industry, where the demand for
com-puter programmers, software engineers and system administrators is strong, with salaries going up by 16%,” says Dr Isaac Tam, Senior Student Counselor of the Student Affairs Office. It was the seventh annual graduate survey, and covered 1,828 full-time bachelor’s degree graduates from 26 programs and achieved a response rate of 98%, or 1,792.

The Most of HKUST
!
A large gathering of members of the University family got together on the evening of 25 May at a Farewell Party for Prof Chia-Wei and Mrs Woo. Prof Peter Dobson, Associate Vice-President for Academic Affairs and Genesis “On the Light Side” columnist, shares his personal impressions of an evening filled with warm and heartfelt expressions of appreciation for the University’s founding President and his wife Yvonne.
When I joined HKUST 12 years ago, I hardly expected to be around for such an occasion. However, when Chia-Wei announced he would be leaving, I began to think of what I might do if offered the chance, and for most of the last year have been assembling bits and pieces of a presentation with a musical theme.
It was a surprise to me when I found that almost the entire program featured musical presentations. An early highlight was the first public presentation of a University anthem written by Prof Pang-Hsin Ting (Dean of Humanities and Social Science). I was told it was hard to sing (the assembled choir did OK with it, though) and it was in Putonghua, so I understood only that there were frequent references to a body of water somewhat farther from campus than Kowloon Bay but more felicitously named (in both English and Chinese). Another original song, “Standing on the Shoulders of Giants,” was also introduced, an occasion only slightly marred by the singing of its authors Mike Hudson and A n d r e w No v a k - S o l i n s k i ( E s t a t e s Management Office).
A family affair
My ow n o f f e r i n g w a s a multimedia presentation built around selections of popular music, intended to provide an accompaniment to the events of the past 10-plus years. It ended with an image of Chia-Wei, his hands raised in triumph, and the theme from the film Rocky playing in the background. He looked pretty good, especially with his head on the body of a much younger Sylvester Stallone. (If you thought his regular swimming was responsible for those muscles, think again.)
The University Women’s Group made sure that Yvonne Woo’s contribution was not overlooked, and presented the President with an apron emblazoned with a series of instructions guaranteed to make a perfect husband out of any man clever (or
henpecked) enough to follow them. Chia-Wei, donning the apron, and noting that the writing was more easily visible to the audience than to him, suggested that the real purpose of the gift was to communicate these thoughts to the spouses of the Women’s Group. If he was correct, this gives new m e a n i n g t o t h e t e r m “exercise in futility.” Even the media who were pre-sent seemed mellow on this night of camaraderie. The only obvi-ous error was in calling it a “Fare-well” Party, since C h i a - We i a n d Yvonne will remain a part of the campus scene … and for many of those present will forever remain a part of their lives.
An off-campus Farewell Dinner for Prof Woo was hosted by former Members of the HKUST Planning Committee, and former and current Members of the Council and the Court on 15 June. It was attended by more than 100 business and community leaders, and representatives of the University.
Yvonne Woo applaudes as Prof Woo tries the University Women’s Group’s apron on for size.
Prof Dobson sums up 12 years of HKUST history in multimedia.

The University community has a new place for gathering and perfor-mance following the inauguration of the HKUST Amphitheater on 22 June. Taking its cue from the open-air theaters of ancient Greece and Rome, the 300-square-meter Amphitheater consists of a paved platform below stepped rows, which function as seats, set into a grass lawn slope. It enjoys breathtaking views of Port Shelter and a central location below the Academic Building, making it a convenient spot for outdoor gatherings and cultural performances.
The first of these performances took place at the opening ceremony on 22 June. First up were representatives of the HKUST Choir, winners of a number of major musical awards in Hong Kong. They were followed by students of the Phillips Academy, a group of exceptionally talented high-school musicians who have performed all over the world. Students and staff who are interested in booking this venue are welcome to contact the Estates Management Office at telephone: 2358-6421.
