首先要向各位報告一個好消息:政府對科大在香港高等 教育界所擔當的獨特角色 ， 最近再次投以肯定和信任的 一→草軍。 這一點，見於大學教育資助委員會(教資會)一月份發表 的 {香港高等教育 共展所長，與時俱進} 報告書。 教資會在報告書上閥述了香港各大學角色分工 以求精進的觀點，而這也正是科大的觀點。 報告書指出，科大的使命是通過培育科技人才 和企業家，帶領傳統工業轉型，推動區內高增 值工業，以促進香港經濟和社會發展。 論及研究生教育，報告書也重申了科大肩負的 重任，指出香港只有三所大學將“在選定的學 | 科領域內為相當數量的學生"提供研究課程， 科大即為其一。 同時，教資會也敦促科大繼續 提供全面的優質本科生教育。 我可以保證，大學將致力履行上述任務，無有 止時。藉著過去 12 年積累的科研卓越力量， 科大在知識的創造和應用，定可不負所託，而 知識正是高增值工業發展以及帶領傳統工業轉 型的關鍵。 隨著研究生人數的增長，科大將可培養更多精英，進一 步發展本校擅長的高科技項目，並應用於社會。本期通 昂就介紹了本校科研傲視同儕的成就。薛紅博士成功突 破，確認與導致精神分裂症有關的第五個基因，而這只 是例子之一。 此外，我們歡迎教資會於三月發表的{香港高等教育一 院校強合、意義重大} 報告 ，支持各大學展開更深入的 自願合作計劃，報告同時指出，現階段不應再進一步探 討科大與香港中文大學合併的構思。 事實上，科大、中 大和香港大學在教學以及研究上，目前已有協作， “國 際人類基因組單體型國計劃"即是一例 。 我們正研究怎 樣提高合作和共用資源的策略，以改善香港教育資源， 使納稅人的投資得到更大回報。 香港高等教育界正面臨轉變，機遇與挑戰並存。 我深 信，大學可以更上層樓，帶領香港同步並進。

discovering a new haplotype - a pattern of DNA sequence variations among individuals that may be associated with predispositions to various dis臼 5的-In a gene that is strongly linked with schizophrenia

"Our discovery of the gene, one of five to cause schizophrenia so far identified , opens new paths for the effective treatment of the dis臼 se ，" Dr Xue explained. ' "So as we start to improve our und 巴 rstanding of schizophrenia, customized and hopefully affordable drugs can be developed for a patient, tailored to their exact medi 日 I needs. Some degree of prevention of schizophr巴 nia will also become a possibility."

Dr Xue's haplotype was discovered in a test group solely made Up of Chinese peop 峙，marking the first occasion that a gene associated with a complex dis臼 sehas been identified in the 仁 hinesepopulation before being discovered in any other ethnicity

Now Dr Xue's upcoming goals include conducting clini 臼 I trials of a drug that will apply her latest research findings for the tr巴 atment of schizophrenia. She will also 仁ontinue her involv巴 mentin the international HapMap project, building the next generation of the human genome map (more on page 4)

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and The University of Hong Kong (HKU) were successfully working together on the International HapMap project.

Prof Jeffrey Wong, Adjunct Professor of Biochemistry and Director of the Applied

Genomics Laborato巾" leads HKUST's HapMap team, working with Prof Madeline Wu and Dr Hannah Xue. He points out that the ongoing project will have

enormous implications for pe的onalizedmedicine in the coming decades, and for the development of biotechnology in Hong Kong

International EMBA (IEMBA) graduates. 34 outstanding senior executives Irom both private enterprises and public institutions were conlerred with their prestigious IEMBA deg 間的

Every effort has been made to create a comfortable living

environment to encourage academic study and the community life of students. Enhanced with more faciliti的 forinteraction, such as common rooms and meeting rooms, the new hall has been designed to stimulate learning and feellike a home-from-home for residents.

According to Prof 仁 KTang, the warden of the new hall, residents

are 仁ommittedto building a unique culture of their own: "We aim

to foster more intellectual sharing through 陀gularmeetings among

residents in small groups," he said.

Honored names

The two wings of the new hall will be known as

the "Jockey 仁 lubTower" and "5 H Ho Tower" in

honor of these generous donors who have been

long-term and staunch supporters of the

University. Along with the Government, the Hong

Kong Jockey 仁 lub Charities Trust was a major

contributor to the hall's construction costs , providing HK$12.5 million , while the 5 H Ho

Foundation recently donated HK$10 million to

the University's Library Enhancement Fund , (the second gift of

H K$1 0 million from the Foundation)
