04/06/2008 Four Distinguished Leaders Conferred Honorary Fellowship

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has today (Wednesday) conferred Honorary Fellowship on four distinguished community leaders in recognition of their contributions to Hong Kong.

The four are: Dr James William Hayes, Mr Hui Hok-Chee, Ir Dr Lo Wai-Kwok and Dr Tam Wai-Ho Samson.

HKUST Pro-Chancellor Dr the Honorable Sir Sze-Yuen Chung, Council Chairman Dr the Honorable Marvin Cheung, and President Paul Chu officiated at the conferment ceremony.

Dr James William Hayes is a scholar-official who values traditional Chinese culture with special interest in the study of Hong Kong and its indigenous people. He served the Hong Kong Government for 32 years. During those days, he was best remembered for his role in the development of the Tsuen Wan new town, for which he won the title of "First Honorary Citizen of Tsuen Wan". He was also President of the Hong Kong Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society for 7 years. Many scholars in the field of Hong Kong culture have benefited from his intimate knowledge of the subject.

Mr Hui Hok-Chee, Chairman of the Lung Cheong Hong (Holdings) Limited, is a legendary trader of dietary supplements. As one of only four authorized dealers in mainland-sourced ginseng and deer antlers, Mr Hui travels throughout many Asian countries in pursuit of his trade. He shares the Chiu Chow community's deep-rooted belief in education, helping to build schools for the underprivileged in Hong Kong and back in his own country. The Chiu Chow Merchants Association, of which he is vice-chairman, has been sponsoring primary and

secondary schools in Hong Kong and setting up scholarships in eight local universities. Mr Hui Hok-Chee (right) and Dr the Honorable Marvin Cheung

Ir Dr Lo Wai-Kwok, President of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers and Managing Director of Surface Mount Technology (Holdings) Limited, has an octopus-like reach into the affairs of the community. Appointed and re-appointed since 1997, he is one of the longest-serving District Council members in Sha Tin. He is also Vice-Chairman of the Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency, member of the Research Grants Council, member of the Building Committee of the Housing Authority, Committee Member of the China Association for Science and Technology, and member of the Political Consultative Conference Zhongshan Committee.

Dr Samson Tam Wai-Ho, Chairman of Group Sense (International) Limited, tasted success early by launching an electronic dictionary "Instant-Dict". His nimble mind quickly turned the product into a household name and early success. He was named one of the "Ten

Outstanding Young Persons". His company, Group Sense, won the Government's "Hong Kong Award for Industry: Technological Advancement". He commits himself wholeheartedly to community services, and is the current Deputy Chairman of the Hong Kong Productivity Council. He also represents the Information Technology Sub-sector on the Election Committee for Hong Kong's Chief Executive.
