Physics and Fun at HKUST

Can the Archimedes Principle or Newton’s Third Law be learned through activities?

finding out when Department of the July to 19 August.

About 400 secondary school students will spend three days they take part in a Summer Camp hosted by the Physics Hong Kong University of Science and Technology from 17

The Summer Camp will hold ten sessions during this period, with 40 participants at each session. Under the guidance of HKUST undergraduates, the participants will explore the world of Physics as well as experience the University’s student-centred learning environment and laboratory facilities.

This is the first Summer Camp organised by the Physics Department for prospective students of Physics at the University. To strengthen links with local secondary schools, physics teachers from all over Hong Kong will also be invited to attend two Saturday sessions.

“Physics is a fundamental science which helps to develop a person’s creativity and powers of reasoning. The objective of the Summer Camp is to involve the participants in stimulating activities that will help them realise that doing Physics can also be fun as well as exciting,” says Professor Nelson Cue, Head of the Physics Department. “We are delighted to learn that out of the 377 applicants for the Summer Camp, 172 are female students. It breaks the myth that only boys are interested in pure science subjects like Physics.”

The Summer Camp is co-sponsored by HKUST’s Office of Public Affairs. For more information, please contact Miss Winnie Pang at 2358 7508 or Dr Wing-Yim Tam at 2358 7490.
