BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING CONFERENCE COMES TO HKUST
Biomedical engineers from around the world will converge on Hong Kong this month for BME ‘96, the International Conference on Biomedical Engineering in Hong Kong. The three-day conference will be held at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology from 3 to 5 June.
The biennial conference will allow participants to evaluate and discuss the latest advances in biomedical engineering research and technology with applications to health. In the ast, biomedical engineering has brought us pacemakers, ECG machines and muc K more. The conference is being organized for the third time by the Biomedical Division of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers.
“Biomedical engineering in Hong Kong is still not very developed, but in the last four or five years we have established a group of researchers in the territory who are very interested in actively promoting the field,” says Prof Peter Cheung, honorary chair of the conference and Professor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at HKUST.
“There is a very, very strong collaborative spirit between the research groups in the five universities here in Hong Kong, and the growing success of this conference is a direct result of that,” says Prof Cheung. “I am particularly pleased that we have managed to attract so many researchers from mainland China this time.”
Among the highlights of the conference will be a keynote speech by Dr E.K. Yeoh, Chief Executive of the Hospital Authority. For the first time, the conference will also feature a Student Paper Competition in which papers by graduate students will be judged and awarded cash prizes.
“We are also very pleased that six representatives from the Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society of the IEEE will join us at the conference,” says Prof Cheung. The grou will include the current president, two past presidents and the president elect of tit e IEEE-EMB Society. The conference will also feature a special distinguished lecture series with the invited guests.
