HKUST STUDIES LOCAL TELECOMMUNICATIONS MARKET
Telecommunication experts at HKUST are studying the diffusion of mobile telecommunication services in Hong Kong in a $400,000 research project funded by a major Danish telecommunications company, Tele Danmark.The company is exploring the regional telecommunications market with a view to entering the prospering Asian telecommunications industry.
“Hong Kong was chosen as the ideal place for the study because mobile telecommunication services here are very open and well-developed. Moreover, the government’s non-intervention policy promotes a market-oriented environment conducive to an exponential growth,” said Dr Kar Yan Tam, associate professor in the University’s Department of Information and Systems Management.

“Nowhere in the world, not even in some developed Western countries, can we find such an extremely high penetration rate,” commented Dr Tam.
He and his colleague Dr Ben A Petrazzini will look closely into the different factors affecting mobile telecommunication services, including service prices and the impact of government policy. A survey of mobile service users will also be conducted to assess consumer behaviour.
The study, which began last September, is scheduled to be completed early this year.
