HKUST Appoints New Head of
Biology
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has appointed Prof Dennis P.H. Hsieh as Head of the Department of Biology. A graduate of National Taiwan University, Prof Hsieh received his ScD degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Most recently, he was a professor and former chairman of the Department of Environmental Toxicology at the University of California at Davis, Prof Hsieh is a renowned researcher in the field of environmental toxicology and has published numerous research articles, reviews and book chapters. Prof Hsieh has also served as a consultant for many international organizations, including the World Health Organization and the U.S National Institutes of Health. He is currently a consultant to the National Health Research Institute in Taiwan, and a keen advocate of environmental protection and food safety.
"With first-class faculty, superb equipment and strong support, the Department of Biology at HKUST has great potential," Prof Hsieh said. "My challenge is to harness that potential and enable the Department to play an important role in society."
As an expert in environmental toxicology, Prof Hsieh intends to contribute to public understanding of natural toxicants and
anti-toxicants in the environment, his major field of research. This interest coincides with ongoing research at HKUST on traditional Chinese medicine and developing natural products from the sea.
