Singing are the pupils of the remote Beau - Roc primary school in Haiti. One of them plays a guitar made from an empty oil tin.Their headmistress, Emile Jean - Noel, is one of the few women school principals in the country.

Over 70 % of Haitian population live below the poverty line with inadequate food, water, schools, or housing. To reduce the hunger that prevents learning and to encourage parents to send their children to school, meals are provided by the World Food Programme.

"The decision to be a rural teacher in Haiti should not be taken lightly" , Emile comments. The British royal family is about to be slimmed down. The queen plans to reduce the number of real royals, it was recently announced. However, there seems little sign of the monarchy (君 主)

disappearing completely.

Up till the 17th century, the British king or queen was believed to rule by " divine ( 神 的)right" , which was the idea that God chose the king or queen to rule and that he or she was therefore above the law. However, this idea ended with the English Revolution, in which King Charles the first was imprisoned and then killed in 1649.

So what role does the British royal family have today?

Well, the Queen has important formal duties: as Head of State, the Queen represents the UK on visits abroad and invites other world leaders to visit the UK.As Head of the Armed Forces, only the Queen can declare when the UK is at war or when war was over. The Queen also has constitutional duties: She has to sign many government and Commonwealth documents every day.

In addition, the royal family spends a great deal of its time traveling up and down the country in support of different charity projects.

But the public in Britain do not believe there should be a royal family.Sometimes, the press and media criticize the royal family as well.

One criticism is that British people should not have to pay for the royal family through their taxes.

Today, the royal family works hard to be relevant in, the modem world. The queen’s speech on TV is less formal every Christmas, and is now available as a podcast (播客) .In 2005, after graduation from university, Prince William spent time teaching English in Uruguay, the sort of work many young British people do at some time in their lives.

Lighthouses are remainders from the past that ships and sailors once sought in order to navigate dangerous U.S.coastal waters. But today, those remaining ones have fallen mostly into disuse, except as tourist attractions and old reminders of a romantic period. The U.S.Coast Guard and the U.S.Lighthouse Society say there are about 600 lighthouses remaining in the U.S., and some of those are at risk, having suffered from years of neglect (忽略).

Dave Eshbaugh of the Oregon State Parks Trust, believes in preserving them." They are worth saving.I think it would be disrespectful to our history and people to let them fall down and go away."

Preservation societies in several states are attempting to keep lighthouses from disappearing. And the U . S . Congress is trying to help . In 2000, lawmakers passed the Lighthouse Preservation Act that lets the Coast Guard transfer ownership of lighthouses, at no cost, to public and private organizations. Local, state and federal agencies also can benefit from the act.

Some private citizens also are helping to restore abandoned lighthouses.Steve and Michelle Bursey own the Heceta Head Lighthouse. It is not just their home, but also their livelihood.

Not far from the lighthouse is the lighthouse keeper’s house. The Burseys have changed it into a bed and breakfast inn. They say the income from their business pays for the necessary repairs that keep the lighthouse in condition.Michelle says it is a labor of love." We have to constantly put hours and hours of time and labor into making it shine."

Aside from making Heceta Head their home and business, the Burseys have a great appreciation for the history and the importance associated with their lighthouse.

" It’ s important to keep them up," says Steve." Once they’ re gone, you can never bring them back." They are vivid reminders of a previous times and a way of life that people like Steve and Michelle Bursey think are worth preserving. They are part of America’ s history, its legend, and its

Who " discovered" America? And who led the first successful attempt to sail around the world in history?

Well, our textbooks have the answers: they are Italian sailor Christopher Columbus and Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan.

However, China’s great explorer, Zheng He ( 1371 -1435 ) , may well have beaten his European counterparts (同行) and sailed around the world first. The life and achievements of the legendary sailor are featured in a TV drama, which is being screened on CCTV 8.

Zheng was an officer of the Ming Dynasty’ s Yongle Emperor. In 1405, the emperor asked Zheng to visit the " Western Seas" , which referred to the seas and lands west of the South China Sea.Zheng traveled with 62 ships filled with silk and china and 27, 800 men.The biggest ship was 126 meters long and could take the weight of 7000 tons.In the following 28 years, Zheng made another six successful journeys. He visited over 30 countries.Since most of the records of Zheng’ voyages have been lost, many historians believe Zheng’ s achievements have been underestimated. British writer Gavin Menzies, who spent 14 years researching the movements of the Chinese fleet, explained it was Zheng who first sailed around the world, in his book, 1421, The Year china Discovered America.

While doing research, Menzies said he was shown a map, dated 1459, which included southern Africa and the Cape of Good Hope.Yet the Cape was not "discovered" by Vasco da Gama until 1497.On the map was a note about a voyage round the Cape in 1420 - and a picture of a Chinese ship.

"What nobody has explained is why the European explorers had maps.Who drew the maps?" he asks in his book."There are millions of square miles of ocean. It required huge fleets to chart them.If you say it wasn’t the Chinese, then who was it?"

Indian weddings have always been special occasions, celebrated with passion, enthusiasm, and, in the case of the wealthy, elaborate (精心准备的) settings and food .For centuries, friends and family sang songs, youngsters danced, and cooks dished out traditional foods when Indian wedding festivities got under way.

But times have changed. Weddings have become occasions for India’s rapidly growing wealthy classes to show off their new wealth.Professional singers and entertainers have replaced the amateur melodies, wonderful parties at five -star hotels are now the pattern, and unusual foreign foods are served along with traditional Indian food.

Neeta Raheja, runs a wedding planning company that organizes weddings ranging in cost from $ 20,000 to $ 2 million." Being really wasteful was something done by the very best class.Today, people who are not that rich want to do like that when it comes to weddings," she explained.

Pumima Mehta, recently hosted her daughter’s wedding. She says organizing a show with style is important in a society where weddings have become statements." I may have personally liked a simple ceremony, but who wants it? You know, everyone is judging you at the affair," she said.

Many now choose several days of feasting and dancing. The parties might have settings based on famously great Bollywood films, fresh flowers flown in from Bangkok, perhaps a hired Mereedes instead of the traditional horse to carry the groom.

" They hire helicopters, and the helicopters are showering petals(花瓣).In the 1990s, we had elephants standing in a row and showering petals," Neeta Raheja said.

Now the wedding industry is a $ 10 billion market growing by 25 percent a year. Such celebrations can wipe away years of savings for many families - but no one is complaining.

Suresh Garg, the manager of one famous jewelry store in New Delhi, says he did do a lot of business ahead of the wedding season that runs from November to February." Income levels are also going up.There is plenty of money available, salaries are rising, share values have increased, people are flooded with money," he said.

Sample writing

My understanding of life is to achieve goals, big or small, through efforts. To succeed doesn’t necessarily mean having much money or power; it means we try hard to live a rich life rather than give up easily.

Life is sweet and full of challenges. If we give up too soon, we may miss good opportunities to arrive at our destination in time or even worse, we may drive ourselves into difficult situations. Take Robinson Crusoe for example. If he had been the kind of person to give up without trying, he would have no chance of survival on the deserted island for 27 years. It was hope and perseverance that made his survival possible.

So bear this in mind: failure happens when we quit and to go on till you succeed is what life is all about.

W: You’ve heard the forecast this morning, haven’t you? M: No. That’s why I’m worried.

W: Why not try the 24-hour telephone weather forecast service? M: Great! How come I didn’t think of that? I’ll do it right away. Text eight

W: Did I tell you that mom called last night? M: Oh, really? How is she?

W: Fine. In fact she is coming over on Sunday. She is really looking forward to seeing us. M: Aha…I’ve just remembered. I’m playing golf with Roy on Sunday all day.

W: But I promised her you’d pick her up at the station. M: Well, you have to pick her up.

W: I can’t. My car is in the garage being fixed. You should have picked it up for me yesterday, remember?

M: Oh…yeah…Well, Why can’t she take a taxi?

W: No, She always gets lost and they drop her off at the wrong house. Anyway, she can’t possibly carry all those golf clubs by herself.

M: Golf clubs? What golf clubs?

W: She thought you might like Dad’s golf clubs so she’s bringing them on Sunday. M: Of course I’ll pick her up.

W: Yes, you are. We do have two rooms for rent. You can use this one as bedroom, the other as sitting room. Or the other way around. You’re an office worker, aren’t you?

M: You’re right. How much do they rent for, altogether? W: No hurry. Let’s talk about it later. Are you married? M: Yes.

W: How many children do you have? M: Not a single one.

W: Well, I would like someone like you to rent my rooms.

M: Really?... This room here looks to the north, with a view of the harbor. Not bad. But I am afraid it’s not big enough to be a sitting room. You know, my wife and I would rather have a better and more comfortable place to “stand” and “sit”…

W: Why, if you know how to make use of it, there’s plenty of room here for you two. M: Perhaps you are right. Then rent—please?

W: Three hundred dollars a month. How about it? M: You’ve got to come down a bit.

W: I can’t. Nowadays, the cost of living is high…All right, make it two hundred eighty. You may move in any time. You haven’t got bits of heavy furniture to move, have you?

M: No, except a heavy piano… W: What? You have a piano!

M: You see, my wife is a pianist while I am an amateur singer myself.

W: I see what you mean now—- your wife “sits” and plays the piano while you “ stand” and sing. Well, in that case, I am afraid I can’t let you have the two rooms. We like to keep this house quiet… You see, I just can’t stand noise of any kind.
