The William Mong Semiconductor Clusters Laboratory Established at HKUST
A presentation ceremony at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology today marks the donation of $10 million by The Shun Hing Education and Charity Fund Ltd towards the establishment of the William Mong Semiconductor Clusters Laboratory. This laboratory adds a completely new research :' capability to Hong Kong, giving it a foothold in several emerging .- - technologies.
"The laboratory will train the scientists and technicians we shall need in the future. It will also enable them to investigate new fields of endeavour that will secure Hong Kong a place among the world leaders, as the Industrial Revolution moves into the twenty-first century," said WilliamMong, Chairman
of Shun Hing Electronic Trading Co Ltd.
"Clusters are objects containing tens to hundreds of atoms," explained Professor Nelson Cue,
at HKUST.
Head of the Physics Department "We have a good understanding of atoms and molecules on the one hand and materials in solid or liquid state on the other, but not the clusters which are in between. Because the physical properties of clusters vary according to their size we have in effect a new dimension in the design and fabrication of new materials"
: .- There are many potential applications for semiconductor clusters. -*. Already they are being investigated with a view to thin film
fabrication, photography.
size specific catalyst preparation, lithography and
They are also currently in use in industry as colour filters in high-tech commercial optical instruments and as key components in optical information processing and all optical communications systems.
Once the properties of semiconductor clusters are better understood and the techniques for generating them are perfected many new industrial applications are expected to follow.
The Shun Hing Education and Charity Fund Limited is a subsidiary of the Shun Hing Group of Companies which aims to benefit the community by providing donations to educational and charitable organisations in Hong Kong and China.
