HKUST Appoints New Director of Biotechnology Research
Institute
Dr Nancy Ip has been appointed Director of the Biotechnology Research Institute (BRI) at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology."Biotechnology is one of the most rapidly growing industries worldwide in the last ten years, an industry where advances in academic research set the pace," says Dr Ip."My immediate aim is to establish the Institute's identity and increase its visibility internationally. Building on our initial research efforts, we hope to build up research strength in several strategic areas, providing Hong Kong with a competitive edge in biotechnology."
Dr Ip received her PhD in pharmacology from Harvard Medical School in 1983. Before joining HKUST as Associate Professor of Biology in 1993, she worked for biotechnology companies in the US for ten years. She holds 19 patents for her discoveries in neurobiology.
She has been a scientific consultant to the Shanghai Institute of Brain Research since 1994, and project director of the Shanghai Research Centre of Life Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences since 1995. A renowned neurobiologist, Dr Ip contributes regularly to professional journals and conferences. She is also active in many international societies, and is a founding member of the Chinese Society of Neuroscience.
