Title:

Experiences at a Medical Center in Taiwan

Content:
Background: Endometriosis is a common and chronic illness in women of reproductive age. Complementary
and alternative therapies such as traditional Chinese medicine have become popular and acceptable. However,
substantial scientific evidence and consensus on treating endometriosis is lacking. The aim of this study is to
investigate the characteristics and utilization of traditional Chinese medicine among women with
endometriosis in a medical center.
Methods: We retrospectively collected endometriosis patients at the Chang Gung Memorial Hospital between
2002 and 2011. Patients’ demographic data, duration and frequency of treatment, serum cancer antigen 125
levels, and traditional Chinese medicine treatment principles and prescriptions were analyzed.
Results: Overall,
1242 subjects
(6.8% of all patients with endometriosis) visited traditional Chinese medical
clinics between 2002 and 2011.
Among them,
38.5% (n=478)
with older age, longer treatment duration, and
higher levels of cancer antigen 125 chose to receive western medicinal therapy at the same time. Among the
2,176 prescriptions written for Chinese medicine,
Gui-
Zhi-Fu-Ling-Wan (Cinnamon Twig and Poria Pill)
(20.67%) and Xiang-Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma )(5.28%) were the most frequently prescribed herbal formula and
single herb, respectively. Gui-Zhi-Fu-Ling-Wan plus Long-Dan-Xie-Gan-Tang was the most frequent
combination of herbal formulae (16.77%). Commonly used therapeutic principles included tonification,
regulating blood, and clearing
heat.
Conclusion: Our data represents the consensus of experts’ knowledge and experience in regards to herbal
selection for the treatment of endometriosis. Further well-designed, randomized, double-blinded,
placebo-controlled clinical trials are warranted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of these drug lists.
