The Hong Kong University of Science & Technology has appointed Professor PO Lock Yue as the Head of its Chemical Engineering Department, the first such university department in the territory.
“Hong Kong is long overdue for a degree course in chemical engineering, as
the need for chemical engineers has only been partially satisfied by graduates from overseas universities and local polytechnics,” said Prof Yue. “Now the Chemical Engineering Department at HKUST will go some way towards redressing the situation.”
“Chemical engineers are typically needed by industry to design, operate and manage a wide range of processes in the manufacture of products and the provision of services, from plastics to food, from energy production to health care,” added Prof Yue. “Chemical engineering is concerned with the use of physical, chemical and biochemical processes in the production environment.”
Prof Yue is a prominent chemical engineer and educator. His chief research interest is in reaction and reactor engineering, advanced oxidation and applied catalysis, including applications for clean technology- and environmental protection. Before joining HKUST, Prof Yue headed at the University of Bath one of the world’s most active research groups in the field of detoxification of pollutants by photocatalysis.
He has published or delivered more than 90 papers in international journals and conferences. He also holds two patents.
