Dear Mark,

How have you been?

Do you know there is Earth Day on calendar? I just heard it from my relative, Miss Wang. She told me something about Earth Day.

I like Earth Day a lot. I mean it is important to think about the environment. You have to think about this: our earth is our only home, and we must not destroy it. Now, on this day, people plant trees, clean up parks, ride bikes to work, turn off air conditioners and recycle papers. I just think that’s so wonderful. Now, because most activities need to take place on the weekend, Earth Day is usually on the weekend before April 22nd so that people can join the activities.

Dear students in Class 315,

When you get this letter, you might be surprised. But seeing Tracy crying at home every day after school, I feel that I need to write this letter to help you know more about my Tracy.

Tracy really likes school and likes to be part of Class 315. It’s just that she is not good at letting people know her feelings, and some of you may find it hard to get along with her sometimes. Tracy seems to enjoy her own little world, do things that interest her only, and may show no patience or interest when you talk to her. She might lose her control in class at times, appear to be self-centered and doesn’t care much about how other people feel or how others look at her. But it doesn’t mean that she hates the whole class or means to act that way. In fact, Tracy is a kid with ADHD.

I believe Mr. Lee might have told the class what ADHD is. And he might have also told you that there are some kids with such a problem in each school who need our help. Therefore, I’d like you to help her with the problem, and try to understand her a little more when she does things that make you angry or uncomfortable. If she does

something unreasonable, please tell her in her face, but don’t shout or say mean words to her. I really hope that all of you can become good friends and that Tracy would not have to cry herself to sleep every night.

The Amazon River, the widest and second longest river in the world, is very important to the Earth. It is not only home to many animals and plants but the key to cutting down the world’s carbon dioxide emission. Though many people spend much time understanding it, they still can’t understand it all.

The river runs through five countries in South America and carries about one-fifth fresh water into the sea. With the biggest rainforest in the world, it makes a home for about thirds-tens species on the land. Over 1,200 new species had been found there from 1999 to 2009. It means people can find a new species there every three days. However, what people have found in the Amazon so far is just a small part of it, and how many species it has is still a question which needs to be answered. In fact, most people who visit it can experience the living power of nature by hearing different kinds of animal sounds or seeing beautiful living things closely in a wet, special, but comfortable space. They are all surprised and touched by it.

What’s more, the Amazon gives the Earth a lot of fresh air, about 40% oxygen, and helps the Earth cool down. Sadly, these years, people cut down many trees there to keep cows, grow plants, build houses and so on. This makes the rainforest smaller. Some people worry about this might speed up the warming of the Earth.

Because of its importance, more and more people show their interests in caring about the river. They wish they could help the Earth in the right way. They are doing their best to save the rainforest in the Amazon, or people won’t be seeing it by 2050.

63. What does “this” mean? A. People who visit.

B. The Amazon.

C. Cutting down the trees. D. Building houses.

64. Why is the Amazon River important to the Earth?

A. It has much water and tens of thousands of animals live there. B. Many people make a living by growing trees there.

C. It helps the earth become warmer.

D. It gives much food to many people in South America. 65. Which is Not true about the Amazon in the reading? A. It has the most rainforest in the world.

B. It is the longest river in the world. C. It has thirds-tens species on the land. D. It gives about 40 % oxygen to the Earth.
