There are many reasons why people go to war, but few causes of war are more bizarre than anger over a soccer match. That’s exactly what caused a war to break out in Central America in 1969, though.

In the 1960s, tensions were high between neighbors El Salvador and Honduras. An abundance of poor Salvadorian immigrants lived bleak lives in Honduras, with each nation blaming the other for the situation. Then, in 1969, the national soccer teams played a series of games to see who would qualify for the 1970 FIFA World Cup. Anger fans caused chaos in all three matches, but the level of tension in the second game reached a level that was abnormal even for big soccer matches. After El Salvador won the final game, anger abounded in both na-tions, a blazing argument broke out, and diplomatic relations were broken off.

Shortly after the breakdown in relations, war began. Moving at a brisk pace, the Sal-vadorian army entered Honduras. But the attack was blunted by the Honduran air force, which destroyed the opposition army’s oil supplies as well as the Salvadorian air force.

Four days after this absurd war began, international pressure brought the catastrophe to an abrupt halt. The approximate number of people killed in the war is 2,000; many more lost their homes and were left facing an ambiguous future.

(C) It left over twenty thousand people dead. (D) It left many people’s homes destroyed. [B]

If you enjoy making people laugh and don’t mind taking any unconventional career path, then you might consider becoming a comedian. A comedian acts kind of like a humorous commentator on society. Much like a newspaper columnist might make editorial comments in their articles, so a comedian makes comments upon anything that draws their interest.

For example, a recent target of amy comedians was the bank executives who, in part, led the world into to the recent global finanacial crisis. Corporate leaders and huge corporations or enterprises are often the targets of comedians’ verbal jabs. The elite, such as the rich, or celebrities, also frequently find themselves the punch lines of jokes. This is why comedians are sometimes viewed by those in power as delinquents or dissidents, but they do provide a valuable service in keeping those in power in check. With that being said, comedians sometimes earn themselves some powerful foes. That’s why others focus on other kinds of humor, such as observational rountines about everyday life, or ethnic humor about certain cultures and their nuances. There are, after all, countless ways to be funny and entertaining.

59. According to this passage, what does a comedian do? (A) They work closely with those in power.

(B) They host TV shows about serious issues. (C) They write funny things in newspaper articles. (D) They make humorous observations about society. 60. What does the author’s opinion of comedians seem to be?

(A) He thinks they do something valuable. (B) He thinks they are worthless to society. (C) He thinks they are a constant nuisance. (D) He thinks they are seldom funny. [C]

Since childhood, I have been told that the key to happiness is having high self-esteem. Firmly, convinced, I tried every possible means to raise my self-esteem. Nevertheless, later in life I realized the overemphasis of self-esteem had consequences that I hadn’t foreseen, and that I should foster self-compassion instead.

(4)

In pursuit of high self-esteem, never did I once settle for mediocrity. When I failed to meet my high standards, I was my own worst critic. Sometimes the depression and frustration over my incapability grew into self-loathing. Others adopt a different strategy: They put others down to make themselves feel superior.

Feeling special and above average seems to be crucial in building up self-esteem. How-ever, it is simply impossible for every person in the world to be “above average” at the same time! What if a certain aspect of ourselves is just below average? This is when self-compassion should come into play.

Self-compassion involves being kind to ourselves, accepting our flaws, and embracing ourselves whole-heartedly. We live in a competitive society, where the value of self-compas-sion often goes unnoticed. People who are not hard on themselves are often described as lazy or self-indulgent. However, having self-compassion doesn’t mean that we can just lie around feeling good about ourselves; it is just that we need to learn when to evaluate ourselves and when to just take a deep breath and relax. Moreover, when we possess self-compassion, we no longer need to belittle others to boost our selfimage. I believe, by developing selfcompas -sion, we can all find our inner harmony and self-worth.

61. What is the main purpose of this passage? (A) To promote the idea of self-compassion. (B) To discuss how competitive our society is.

(C) To share a personal story about pursuing self-respect. (D) To point out the outcomes of focusing on self-esteem.

62. What does the word “mediocrity” in the second paragraph mean? (A) The effects of an action or event.

(B) The quality or state of not being very good.

(C) A strong feeling of sympathy for someone who is suffering. (D) A situation where people try to be more successful than others.

63. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a possible downside of high self-esteem? (A) We may sharply criticize others.

(B) We may swallow any insult from others. (C) We may become overly critical of ourselves. (D) We may have an extreme dislike of ourselves. 64. What can be inferred about the author? (A) The author was probably a perfectionist. (B) The author bullied others to build self-esteem.

(C) The author considers that those who are not strict with themselves are lazy. (D) The author now believes feeling above average is the key to true happiness. VII. Translation 10 % (Two points for each. )
