Voluntourism, or volunteer vacationing, is one of the world’s fastest growing tourism trends. Voluntourists use their vacation time to help people in other countries. For hundreds of years, doctors and priests have been going abroad to help those in need. In the 1960s, this idea started to change and develop into voluntourism. Nowadays, many young students are getting involved, and several groups have been founded to organize volunteer vacations. There are many different types of voluntourism, including farming, construction, wildlife

protection, and others. If you care about helping poor children, you could help build an orphanage in El Salvador. Or if you want to protect animals in danger, you could head to Costa Rica to work with Leatherback sea turtles.

(B) Yayoi Kusama’s work is dominated by polka dots and other repeating patterns. She often uses psychedelic colors, and her work has evolved from paintings to landscape installations, which have made her famous. However, there is a dark secret to all her work. Kusama suffers

(3)

from hallucinations and obsessive thoughts, which sometimes are suicidal. It is through her art that Kusama is able to manage her illness, using art as a release mechanism.

Kusama was born in Japan in 1929 to a wealthy, conservative family. Her mother didn’t know anyone in New York, but she quickly made a name for herself in the local avant-garde art scene. She would often wear traditional Japanese dresses to parties to stand out. She also supported the values of the 1960s by organizing anti-Vietnam War “happenings,” in which she would paint polka dots on participants’ naked bodies.

Kusama moved back to Tokyo in the 1970s and placed herself in a mental institution, where she has been for the past four decades. She has a studio down the street from it where she goes whenever she feels the need to create. She once told a journalist, “ I don’t want to cure my mental problems; rather, I want to utilize them as a generating force for my art.”

Her well-known Infinity Nets works are canvases up to 30 meters wide with circular patterns. One such painting sold for $5.1 million, a record amount for a living female artist. She has also collaborated with Louis Vuitton to feature her polka dot designs on the company’s luxury bags and accessories.

Kusama turned her anguish into high earnings and international fame, and she readily admits that she’s hungry for more. A prolific artist now in her 80s, Yayoi Kusama is still going strong. 60. Which of the following is true about Yayoi Kusama?

(C) If you watch a big group of people stuffing themselves into a phone booth, you would think they were nuts. You would feel the same if you saw a man sitting on a flagpole for days. However, there was a time when both of these activities were not only acceptable, but also cool. These are just two of many fads that have come and gone.

Fads come in many shapes and forms. They can involve a product, a particular style of dress, or a type of behavior. But all fads enjoy a short –lived burst of extreme popularity. All of sudden, it seems like they are everywhere. Then, just as quickly , they go out of fashion, only to be replaced by a different fad.

The amazing thing about fads is that there is no way to predict how they will start. In 1959, a group of South African students claimed to have fit 25 people into one phone booth. The story was picked up and repeated. Soon students began competing to break that record. For the rest

of the year, “phone booth stuffing” was all the rage on college campuses around the world. Fads can often be seen as a reflection of the culture that embraces them. The rise of computers, for instance, coincided with the “electronic pets” craze. These little, egg-shaped devices took schoolyards around the world by storm in the 1990s. Children carried their “pets” everywhere because the electronic animals required constant monitoring to stay healthy. These kids were the first generation to grow up with computers, so it made sense that this was their most popular fad.

Advanced technology may also drive fads. A “flash mob” is a huge group that meets together to do something funny or unusual, and then disappears immediately. This type of coordination was made possible by the spread of advanced communications technology. Flash mobs could not have taken off before cell phones and the Internet became part of our daily lives.

Fads can start in countless different ways, and over countless different things. It is impossible to guess where the next fad is going to come from, but it will certainly come. Fads are driven by the desire that we all want to fit in and be cool. It’s one thing that will never go out of style.
