Some never start their day 30 first stopping by the convenience store for a cup of coffee. Others clench their thirst and lessen their hunger during mealtimes in stores. Therefore, it’s common to see them crammed with a number of people.

In fact, there are several clever marketing strategies behind the success of convenience stores, one of 31 is the vast variety of services that attract customers. Namely, the more often people go to the stores, 32 buy something. For instance, the pay-on-pickup service enables people to collect what they have bought online. The ATMs 33 inside allow people to withdraw or deposit money in the neighborhood. All of the customers that enter the store may end up buying things. People looking forward to 35 things in advance can also take advantage of the preordering service in stores. While film as inspiring as Anne Frank has offered insights on the horrors of the second world war, the adaptation of Markus Zusak's The Book Thief has also brought us back to the Nazi era, 46 the Jews hid themselves to from being hunted by the government.

The Book Thief, published in 2006, held a spot on the New York Times young-adult

best-seller list for almost five years. In the novel, Zusak created a girl 47 Liesel, who is almost a gentile version of Anne Frank. Illiterate as she was at first, she developed an interest in books as she learned how to read and write. It was her great passion for reading 48 drove her to “secretly borrow” books from the mayor’s home, which was the reason why she got the nickname “book thief.” Though Liesel was forced to join the Hitler Youth, she had 49 felt disgusted than she saw the Nazis' book-burning displays. She even developed friendship with a Jew 50 by her parents in the basement of their house. Fortunately, unlike Anne Frank, Liesel survived the war and became a writer just like her creator.

The novel had its beginning from a childhood memory his mother had shared with Zusak. In her village, the Nazis were herding Jews 51 they were cattle, and people came out to watch. A teenage boy impulsively lent a hand to a starving old Jew who could barely walk, both of 52 were then beaten mercilessly by a Nazi guard. Through Mother’s memory Zusak saw the essential ingredients of narrative: the good impulse of the boy and the evil of the Nazis. With an eye to 53 the mistreatment, parts of her mother’s childhood was woven into the storyline. Even if the settings of The Book Thief are mostly “fictional”, 54 that the place and the characters don’t really exist in reality, it still invokes some of the most familiar images of the Nazi dictatorship at that time. Its plot will surely take you on an emotional roller coaster; it wrings your heart and makes you 55 as you read.

It is generally believed that if bees become extinct, humans will have only four years left to live. 56 . Over the last few decades, the decline in the bee population has been a warning that the earth’s biodiversity, together with human survival, is being threatened. Bees are very efficient at pollinating plants with the ability to fly among more than 50000 flowers per day. 57 . Furthermore, humans would not be able to make use of these plants since they are unable to reproduce. If the plants are eventually gone, it will affect the supplies of food, clothing, medicine, and fuel that we depend on for survival. 58 . To sum up, bees are of the utmost importance to human survival.

The reason why bees have experienced a steep decline is that humans have destroyed the bees’ natural habitats. 59 , such as the use of pesticides. The disappearance of bee

colonies will cause an imbalance in the ecosystem, in which all species have their roles to play. The significance of biodiversity in the ecosystem can be illustrated through the example of the Great Famine in Ireland. 60 . At that time, millions of lives were taken away because of the poor harvest of the potato species that Irish had lived on.

61 , so it is time for us to take action before it is too late to save the bees and our planet. After all, we humans are reaping what we have sown.

(A) Agricultural practices have contributed to the destruction (B) Though astonishing, the prediction is highly probable

(C) It wouldn’t have broken out if people had planted more than one kind of staple crop (D) Without fertilization, food shortages would also arise as crop yields fall abruptly (E) Any artificial means of pollination can’t simply compare with them

(AB) Biodiversity insures both our own survival and that of our future generations

According to the United Nations, the rising amount of microplastics in our sea is one of the world’s greatest environmental threats. Several million tons of microplastics – pieces of plastic less than five millmeters long – have already been dumped into the oceans, and plastic production is only increasing. The debris comes from a variety of sources, inclusive of

cosmetics, clothing, and bags.

What’s particularly concerning is that the chemicals in microplastics have been linked to genetic problems in marine life and pose health risks to humans. Animals that ingest

microplastics are exposed to poisonous substances which can affect their hormones, growth, and ability to reproduce. Filter-feeding sharks, whales and rays are vulnerable, as they can swallow thousands of small pieces of plastic each day. Other than the predators, hundreds of other species of sea creatures ingest microplastics as well. Therefore, scientists warn that humans who eat large amounts of seafood could be similarly in danger.

To lessen humans’ impact on marine life, it’s vital to take steps to be environmentally conscious. No matter what you choose to do, participating in a beach cleanup or striving to cut down on the number of single-use plastic items, your efforts matter. Luckily, Taiwan has taken steps to reduce plastic waste. Since January in 2018, stores have no longer provided free plastic bags for customers. The ban is believed to reduce the number of discarded plastic bags by 20 million a year. Moreover, Taiwan plans to completely ban them along with the straws and cups by 2030.

Your room is a mess, stacked with piles of books, pieces of clothing, and lovely photos and postcards that you’ve cherished since childhood. It strikes you that it is time to say goodbye to these belongings. However, the inner voice keeps telling you that the items may come in handy one day, which makes it even harder to get rid of any one of them. If you have the above symptoms, then you might fall into the victim of “hoarding disorder,” a psychological condition in which people find throwing away items stressful.

Hoarding is having persistent difficulty parting with possessions, regardless of their actual value. People suffering from this situation are classified as “hoarders.” Some may be confused with the difference between a collector and a hoarder. Collectors usually develop their hobby because of a deep interest in a certain object whereas hoarders stuff random objects, even the worthless ones, whenever they can find space. The things they stacked don’t bring them excitement or joy, only anxiety.

Recent studies suggested that hoarding is related to genetics in some way, since it can run in families. It may also be associated with human evolution. Those who stored necessities and possessions were more likely to survive the harsh winter and famine in the past. And the

behavior lasted and existed in some people even though it’s not necessary nowadays. If you are trying to overcome a hoarding disorder, it’s better to make gradual progress with the help of someone you trust. Take before-and-after pictures, which serve as reminders of your

achievement that can boost your confidence.

To help hoarders, we can’t just force them to throw things out, which might pressure them into accumulating even more stuff. Getting psychologists involved is the best solution since these experts can show them how to change their thoughts through practices, which will give them a chance to live without burden.

65. According to the article, which of the following statement is TRUE about hoarders? (A) They were passionate collectors at first but got sick afterwards.

(B) They store trivial things, even if others consider these items useless. (C) Once they clean up the houses, their symptoms won’t appear again. (D) They are more likely to stay alive when a disaster strikes nowadays. 66. According to the article, hoarding disorder _______.

(A) could be inherited from parents (B) hardly requires professional treatment (C) brings about social isolation and depression (D) results from the pressure to arrange rooms neatly

67. Which of the following methods may help hoarders overcome the disorder? (A) Turn to psychologists for pills that can relieve their stress.

(B) Compare the pictures of a hoarder’s room with that of a collector’s room. (C) Ask them to clean the room up and throw away all the stuff right away. (D) Help them keep a part of an area clean before moving on to another space. 68. Which of the following sentence is NOT mentioned in the article?
