四、閱讀測驗(共 32 分,每題 2 分)

All relationships go through ups and downs, especially those between parents and

children. Parents make clear what’s acceptable and what isn’t; and children always complain about it. Arguments arise but things usually get settled down in the end. Sometimes,

however, children just can’t accept what their parents have done. So they find a lawyer, and take legal action!

One eleven-year-old boy in mainland China had been promised a new computer by his mother if he got good grades in school subjects. He studied hard and did get excellent grades. However, later his mother told him she did not have enough money to buy the computer after all. So he found a lawyer and took legal action against his own mother!

Remarkably, a teenage girl in India also took legal action against her parents because they wouldn’t let her study enough! She claimed that they made her do a lot of housework and wouldn’t allow her to spend much time doing schoolwork or preparing for examinations. The girl wanted to go to college and pursue a career, but she complained that her parents just wanted her to find a husband and get married.

So the next time you have an argument with your parents, the legal option may be available to you. But it’s not the best option. Legal action can be expensive and can take a long time! What’s worse, it will surely damage the relationship between you and your parents. It’s much simpler to talk things over with your parents calmly, and try to find a solution to the problem.

4 6 ( ) In the third paragraph, the phrase “pursue a career” is closest in meaning to _____. (A) do a job in a field (B) chase a celebrity (C) earn money (D) follow her own heart 4 7 ( ) According to the passage, _____ is the best solution to an argument.

(A) a lawyer (B) communication (C) the legal action (D) gifts that children want 4 8 ( ) Which of the following statements is true?

(A) The boy in China got a computer in the end.

(B) Children always accept what their parents have done.

(C) Arguments between parents and children can never be settled down. (D) The girl in India suited her parents because she wanted more time to study.

In recent years, El Niño has been in the news because of the natural disasters it has caused. The El Niño weather pattern is similar to a season because it is a cycle that repeats itself. The difference is that it occurs at irregular intervals. The El Niño weather pattern is a very simple phenomenon. It is a time when the winds that normally blow east to west across the Pacific Ocean weaken. Because no one knows exactly when the wind will weaken, the effects of the weather pattern are hard to predict.

Throughout the 20th century, records of the ocean temperature and atmospheric conditions began to accumulate and showed researchers that the effects of El Niño were occurring simultaneously around the world. When the warm-water fish and floods arrived in South America, it was apparent that droughts happened in parts of Asia and Australia. In 1972, scientists had their theories of El Niño confirmed. In the year, the typically strong winds in the Pacific weakened. As a result, a huge expanse of warm water that normally would have stayed pushed up against Asia began moving eastward. The warm water traveled across the Pacific and ended up once again off the coast of Peru, bringing it tropical fish and large amounts of rain. At the same time, Malaysia, Indonesia and Australia recorded a significant drop in rainfall.

The sequence of events during an El Niño season has been correctly identified, but scientists still don’t know exactly why the winds weaken at irregular intervals. In fact, scientists admit there is still much that remains unknown about the effects oceans have over the global weather patterns. Recent data have proven that El Niño is even responsible for the disturbances as far away as Africa. Some scientists today predict global warming from human activities will enhance the effects of El Niño. If this is true, the flooding, storm damage, fire and drought caused by El Niño will become more severe in the future. All we can do at present is continue to research global weather patterns and prepare ourselves when we believe El Niño is about to occur.

4 9 ( ) Which is NOT one of the characteristics of El Niño? (A) It is hard to predict when El Niño will occur.

(B) El Niño usually lasts two to four years near the Pacific Ocean.

(4)

(D) El Niño occurs when the winds that blow east to west across the Pacific Ocean lose strength.

(C) To develop intelligent technological devices.

(D) To stop overusing the land and protect the environment. 5 2 ( ) What does the last paragraph imply?

Desertification is a serious problem all around the world. It is the process by which land becomes desert, making it too difficult for most plants and animals to live. Although people are responsible for desertification, we are also the only ones who can stop it from spreading. Studies reveal that human practices are the main causes of desertification. For example, excessive exploitation and grazing harm the land so much that plants can no longer grow. Desertification happens quickly in poor areas because people living there have no choice but to take as much as they can from the land. Climate change also plays a part in desertification by causing droughts and extreme heat that make farming impossible.

People can stop desertification only if they make significant changes in the way they use their land. They should use the land and water wisely by planting trees, building rock walls, and digging irrigation canals . All of these things can help collect and save extra water, which keeps the soil in better shape. In addition, improved farming techniques, such as the smart use of limited water supplies and proper crop cycles, can prevent the ground from becoming overused.

As the world’s population grows, more and more land is at risk of desertification. People,

as well as their governments, must act quickly to make sure that their land is used wisely and will be productive for many years to come. If not, increasing numbers of people will be forced to compete for limited resources.

5 3 ( ) According to the passage, what is the consequence of desertification? (A) The global temperature rises drastically.

(B) Soil and vegetables are contaminated.

(C) The land becomes dry and unsuitable for farming. (D) The city center gets warmer than rural areas. 5 4 ( ) What is the main reason for desertification? (A) Human activities.

(B) Great damage has been done. (C) The future of the earth is uncertain.

(D) Desertification is as serious as global warming.

5 7 ( ) Which of the following best describes the author’s tone? (A) Sarcastic. (B) Worried. (C) Sentimental. (D) Humble.

The bus had been standing still for a few minutes in downtown Frankfurt, Germany. Frustrated, a passenger shouted, “We’re supposed to be at the station at 13:44 not 13:52!” “Well, there’s nothing I can do. There’s so much traffic!” countered the driver. “Yes, you could have left the bus station on time! You’re not the only one with a job to go to, you know,” said the passenger. In the midst of this exchange, many passengers anxiously

checked their watches.

In Germany, punctuality is sacred. Meetings start and usually end on time because agendas are strictly followed. Train and bus schedules are planned meticulously. While waiting on a platform, you will hear announcements that a train is running three or five minutes late; it’s rarely rounded off to ten or more.

The German attitude toward time is single-tasking, meaning doing only one thing at a time. An interruption or spontaneous happening is considered a problem. Precision and competence are highly valued. This probably explains Germans’ success in technological task and product orientated industries. So, imagine the stress when they have to work with cultures that are not always punctual. Indeed, there are still tribal societies who judge time by the way the sun moves. In parts of Asia or Africa, fifteen minutes can mean more than fifteen minutes. Yet, for Germany, globalization of work processes has ironed out some differences.

5 8 ( ) What’s the best title for this passage? (A) Germany’s Success in Technology (B) The Meaning of Time in Germany (C) The Importance of Punctuality (D) Single-tasking and Multitasking

5 9 ( ) According to the passage, which of the following statement is true? (A) Taking a bus in Germany is not a joyful experience.

(B) People in Germany are often irritated by train delays.

(C) Germany can be reckoned as the most punctual country in the world. (D) Germans often refuse to work with those who tend to procrastinate.

6 0 ( ) The word “meticulously” in the second paragraph is closest in meaning to _____. (A) sloppily (B) frantically (C) emphatically (D) thoroughly

6 1 ( ) Which of the following does the author think underlies Germany’s technological achievements?

(A) The inventions that help speed up work processes.

(B) The motivations for becoming the most advanced country. (C) The correctness attributed to single-tasking.

(D) The efficiency of multitasking methods.
