HKUST Announces Official OPening

H.E. the Governor, Sir David Wilson, officially opened the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology with the unveiling of a plaque marking the event. Professor L.M. Birt, Vice-Chancellor of the University of New South Wales and member of the HKUST University Council, gave the Opening Address.

In his address, the University’s Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Chia-Wei Woo, reviewed the University’s accomplishments over the past three and a half years and spoke of how HKUST will contribute to Hong Kong’s sustained prosperity. He highlighted the new airport and port projects as an area where HKUST faculty and students can have an impact.

“Seldom do cities anywhere see projects as ambitious as Hong Kong’s land- see-and-air infrastructure developments. To design, construct, operate, maintain, and constantly upgrade new facilities, Hong Kong will need many thousands of engineers and managers. Is Hong Kong fully anticipating such manpower demands? Does Hong Kong expect to meet all these demands, as in the past, with hiring expats and overseas contractors? . . .

“In anticipation of what society will surely call upon the new University to do, we commenced our participation in this venture by accelerating the establishment of relevant academic programmes long before the announcement of the Sino-British airport agreement. Specialists in the fields of infrastructure development, environmental studies, and transportation were appointed to head academic and R&D units. Contracts are being negotiated with government departments to facilitate faculty consultancy. Postgraduate training is offered to engineers and managers in critical specialities, in many cases through advanced degree courses for on-the-job personnel. We have no time to lose.”

The afternoon ceremony was attended by more than 600 dignitaries and academics and the entire student body.

Following the ceremony, the Governor’s party and other toured the recently completed camp us.

school, of Humanities and Social Science, offers general education to all undergraduates and research degrees for postgraduates.

Phase I of the three-phased campus construction was completed in August of this year. Built with government funds and a donation of nearly $2 billion from The Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club, the facilities are some of the most modern in Asia, and are designed to accommodate the high-tech equipment needed for modern research and teaching in the sciences. The faculty are equally outstanding, having been recruited from some of the most prestigious international institutions, including Princeton University, University of California Los Angeles, and Oxford.
