Mr. Chi Po-lin, the late director of the documentary Beyond Beauty: Taiwan from Above, didn’t start with films. 51 Like other photographers, what he wanted to capture was grand natural scenery. Things took a turn in 1998 when his photographs attracted the attention of The Earth Geographic Monthly and were put in their articles. 52 After that, he no longer looked only for what was pretty, but what the island really looked like. In 2009, Typhoon Morakot struck Taiwan. Soon after the sky cleared, he flew through the disaster areas and was horrified. What he saw tore at his heart. He started to think about how to prevent such tragedies from occurring again. 53 As a result, he quit his job and gave up his pension. 54 After four hundred hours of shooting in the air, he completed his masterpiece, Beyond Beauty. This impressive film manages not only to celebrate Taiwan’s spectacular beauty but to contract it with the destruction humans bring to nature. 55

Understanding and implementing effective selling strategies is essential for businesses of all sizes. It will influence whether customers decide to make a purchase from you or your competitor. Below are some strategies a company might use:

Know Your Product

If you don't know the features and benefits of the product or service you're selling, you won't be able to answer customer questions or handle objections. Familiarize yourself with products and services you sell by reading their accompanying marketing brochures and sales letters, by testing the product or service and by asking your manager questions about a given product.

Show, Don't Tell

When customers can explore products or services, they can get a better idea of how they fit into their lives. This also makes the sales process run smoother. If you own an ice cream shop, you can offer product samples. If you offer online time management solutions to

(3)

entrepreneurs, you can grant them trial access to the program.

Understand Your Target Customer

If you have knowledge of your target customers, you can readily identify their needs and help them find solutions. Each company has an ideal client it wants to target and acquire.

Characteristics such as age, income level, marital status, education level, geographical location, hobbies and interests help companies pinpoint their markets.

Price Competitively

You don't have to make your prices lower than or on a par with your competitors. You may choose to price yours higher, but you must ensure that you can ensure the value in paying more for what you offer. Value-added benefits might include an extended warranty or lifetime guarantee, your level of expertise or the quality of your products.

( ) 56. Who might have more interests in reading the above strategies? (A) Those who are going to make big purchases in a shopping mall. (B) Those who are in charge of employing new staff for a company. (C) Those who are analyzing how to be a wise customer.

Chi Po-lin was an aerial photographer in the civil service and he quit his job to turn his eye on the state of things in Taiwan in his first film. Beyond Beauty has won the Golden Horse Award for Best Documentary. Chi has weightier issues on his mind and, in fact, the

destructive impact of rampant tourism comes in for its share of criticism. From above looking down, one sees not just beauty, but also a ravaged landscape. He shows us the destructive force of landslides and makes a persuasive case that the increased frequency of natural

disasters is the result of human development. Cutting roads into mountains makes it more convenient to transport goods and holiday-makers, but doing so disrupts the natural flow of water. Because money talks, trees are cut down so that cash crops such as betel nut, tea and cabbage can be grown. Soil becomes loose. Newly developed roads and resorts lie in the shadow of looming tragedy.

To his credit, Chi does not harangue. Instead, what comes through is genuine love for the land and the pain and indignation of seeing it thoughtlessly scarred. Beauty still exists, but it has to be protected and respected instead of being trampled on in the name of reckless progress. He also acknowledges that this is not a simple issue because the conflicts between environmental protection and human’s development are not easy to solve. The documentary ends on a note of hope as it singles out individuals who are trying to make a difference in the way they work with the land. As word spreads, hopefully this will further raise awareness and maybe, just maybe, mark the turning of the tide.

( ) 60. Where are you more likely to see the above article?

(A) From a film review. (B) From a feedback of the photo exhibition. (C) From a scientific report. (D) From the trailer of a tragedy.

(C) Humans build resorts to develop tourism.

(D) Humans build more reservoirs to save water for daily use. ( ) 62. What’s Chi’s attitude toward the environmental issue?

(A) He believes Taiwan’s beauty is still there as long as it’s respected and protected. (B) He considers it easy to be fully solved when the government takes the lead. (C) He is satisfied with the award and the popularity the documentary gains. (D) He thinks it’s hopeless as long as humans still exist on Earth.

What is the meaning of Christmas? It all depends. For many, Christmas has lost its true meaning: just an excuse for retails to sell their merchandise to consumers who feel pressure to give people expensive gifts, such as iPhones or bottles of luxurious perfume. Yet, it turns out that they don’t really need them at all. For many children, Christmas means Santa Claus visiting on Christmas eve, placing gifts under the Christmas tree. For other children,

Christmas is a time to doubt the existence of Santa.

For me, despite the stress, the materialism, and the doubts of faith, I still believe in celebration. I still listen to Christmas Carols, put up the tree, perhaps attend a church service, watch shows and films with a Christmas theme, exchange of small gifts, and spend time with my elderly parents. Celebration nurtures the spiritual within us. Finding the real joy of Christmas comes not in the rushing to the mall, purchasing more gifts. Nor is it uncovered by trying to make Christmas the perfect celebration. We discover joy when we learn to savor the particulars of the Christmas season. Savoring requires us to stop and be mindful, to

Using striking stencil art and profound imagery, Banksy has captured the interest of art lovers, activists, and graffiti artists around the globe. By displaying art in crowded cities across the world, Banksy puts social and political issues in our face. His pieces force us to stop and think—something that we often avoid doing in our day-to-day lives. Below are three of them:

1. Don’t let others deter you.

This Boston piece, one of Banksy’s most famous, takes yet another swing in the name of

disappointed idealism. Many of us feel forced to give up our dreams. We never pursue them due to financial burdens or other hardships. This may serve as a wakeup call for those of us who’ve been asleep. Ultimately, we should follow our dream, regardless of outside discouragement.

2. Utilize kindness.

This London piece of a protester throwing a bouquet of flowers may be Banksy’s most famous piece thus far. The remarkable idea behind this piece is the use of unexpected

weapons. The protester fights not with a grenade or other harmful device, but with an innocent bouquet of

flowers. This suggests we may be able to get more done by negotiating kindly, not malevolently.

3. Everyone’s got skeletons.

This rather humorous scene is one of Banksy’s

most famous pieces, painted in Bristol, England. Along with the idea that we’ve all got some things to hide, this piece seems to warn us that things aren’t always what they seem. Don’t blindly believe everything you’re told, as someone’s dishonesty may be creating an illusion.

( ) 67. What’s the message the first graffiti wants to deliver? (A) We should stop dreaming, for they will not be realized. (B) Financial difficulties are hard to overcome.

(C) It’s time to wake up from our daydreams.

(D) No matter how tough the reality is, we should still stick to our dreams. ( ) 68. What is the best solution suggested in the second graffiti?

(A) Violence. (B) Destructive weapons. (C) Negotiation. (D) A grenade.

( ) 69. What can we learn from the third piece?

(A) Sometimes what we are told might not be the truth. (B) Always give others a helping hand when they’re in need. (C) We should learn to hide our skeletons.

(D) It’s just an illusion that the naked couple has cheated on her lover. ( ) 70. Is the author for or against graffiti?

(A) He remains neutral on this topic. (B) He disagrees with its existence.

(C) He regards it as a meaningless expression. (D) He holds a positive attitude toward it.
