Message from the Department Head
The year of 2004 has been a
great year for OUI' clepal'Lment. With the support from different inclustries, we have successfully organized ancl participated in clifferent industry events, such as the LSClvl1 symposium, SCAN China Exhibition in Shanghai and the China High Tech Pail' in Shenzhen. We have established the Zhejiang Advanced Manufacturing Institute of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. 'vVe are currently in the course of establishing
the Logistics and Supply Chain Institute in Nansha. We are very pleased that OUI' depal'Lment continues to receive prestigious recognitions. Apart from receiving two liE Transaction Paper Awards and Publication of the Year
Awal'Cl, in terms of the number of paper published in flagship journals, our department I'anked top five in the
world in the past two years.
Our joint program on Global Manufacturing with Stanford
University has been a great success over the past years. We will be hosting a 'IOth Anniversal'y Ceremony to
celebrate this long-term partnership.
I am impressed by the quality of our students and the effectiveness of our programs. With the MTM and EDTLM pI'ograms, we network industry professionals with our undergraduate stuclents through tile mentorship program. Besides, our graduates have received great job 0pp0l'tunities both in Hong Kong and overseas. POI'
example, although Hong Kong Disneylancl is not yet opened, they have recruitecl five of our graduates already. They will also provide summer internship opportunities for our undergraduate students.
No less important in the continual success are OUI' graduate students in their own personal development. Our MPhil stuclent, Jiqing Tang was recruited by NVIDIA in Silicon Valley with a very good remuneration package.
Anothel' MPhil student, Daniel Mo received the Sil' Edward
Youcle Memorial Pellowships fOI' Postgraduate Research
Stuclents in the 2004 /2005 academic year.
All of these have been a great boost for our depal'tment. I look forward to working with my colleagues and students
to make OUI' depal'Lment even better.

This year, year one students with excellent academic
performance in A-Level and HKCEE were awarded with IEEM
scholal'ship 2004. The scholarship is offerecl by the IEEM Depal'tment and is only for students in OUl' department.
Honored students not only received scholarships in cash, one of them was also granted a paicl internship opportunity working with Prof. Mitchell Tseng. It was a valuable experience for
stuclents to gain work experience during their stuclies.
Purthermore, DHL has also offered the DHL Logistics Scholarship
specifically to our BEng IELM students. It aims at awarding
sLlldents with good academic achievement in the field of logistics and completing a Pinal Year Project wOl'king with DHL.
