ONGREGATIONHong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) will present academic degrees to 2,507 graduates during its Tenth Congregation from 6 to 8 November 2002. This is the largest congregation since the University conferred degrees on its first graduates in 1993.
Of those 2,507 graduates, 1,817 will receive bachelor’s degrees, 615 are master’s degree recipients, and 75 will be conferred PhDs. Since its establishment in 1991, HKUST has nurtured more than 18,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students.
On 8 November, the third day of the Congregation, honorary doctorates will be conferred on four distinguished persons for their outstanding contributions to education, research and public service. They are Prof Chen-Ning Yang, 1957 Nobel Laureate in Physics, who will be conferred the honorary degree of Doctor of Science; Mrs Laura May Lung Cha, Vice-Chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission, who will be awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws; Prof Anne O Krueger, First Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), who will be presented the honorary degree of Doctor of Social Sciences; and Prof Henry T Y Yang, Chancellor of the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB), who will be awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Engineering.
Dr C K Lau, Director of Fong On Construction and Engineering Co Ltd, was presented the award of Honorary Fellowship today, for his contribution to geotechnical engineering in Hong Kong.
Teaching excellence and student leadership are also honored at the third ceremony. Assistant Professor Robert Ferguson, of the Division of Social Science, will be presented the Michael G Gale Medal for Distinguished Teaching––the University’s top teaching award––in recognition of his commitment and dedication to nurturing students.
Kaxton Siu Yu Kwan will be presented the Stephen Cheong Kam-chuen Medal for Distinguished Service to the Student Body. During his term as the President of HKUST Students’ Union in 2001-02, he made an exemplary contribution to the enhancement of social responsibility amongst students, through his active participation in social movements.
