SOCE English Department Freshmen. Transfer students, 2nd, 3rd and 4th yr. students who need elective credits are encouraged to take on-line courses.

課程範圍:

Course Description

1. Students will be given instruction about certain pronunciation problems, and how to correct those problems in order that they may conduct discussions in English with confidence so that they feel comfortable learning in the English-only environment at Fu Jen.

2. Students will learn how to ask for information, get around, and help international friends on campus in English

3. Students should be able to write e-mail messages to teachers in both proper English and proper format on the following topics.

a. to ask for leave

b. to ask teachers questions about various subjects c. to ask teachers to write recommendation letters

d. to send feedback suggestions to teachers about the following course-related student-teacher evaluation problems

1) how a class is structured (organized) 2) time management

when teachers are available how they may be contacted

the amount of time necessary to complete a written assignment

a reading assignment

3) the work load of a particular course 4) grading policy

4. Letters

a. the correct form (layout) of a personal letter (with an example) b. the correct form (layout) of a business letter (with an example)

5. A reinforcement of the basic types of Essays for academic survival (with examples) a. Narration

b. Exposition c. Description d. Argumentation

6. Students should be able to write the following:

a. a resume

b. an autobiography

c. a letter of application for a summer job (or, if you are currently working, for a job you would like to have in the future).

7. Students will be provided with a study guide for analyzing fiction and non fiction works

8. Students will become familiar with the content of an English language newspaper

Resume; Letter of Application for a Summer Job; Asking for a Letter of Recommendation:

Suggestions for analyzing works of literature (emphasis: fiction, non-fiction)

Syllabus. Note: Students are to pay careful attention to the detailed syllabus, which will be distributed during the first week of class.

Handouts. Note: The text for this course will consist of handouts. As the university has a limit on the number of handouts that can be printed, students should be prepared to pay for handouts (which will be cheaper than buying a textbook).
