Fans of the Boston Red Sox must be familiar with the “Curse of the Bambino.” It was a superstition used to explain the team’s failure to win a World Series championship for eighty-six years. The curse was said to have begun in 1920, when the Red Sox traded George Herman Ruth, Jr., often known as Babe Ruth, to the New York Yankees.

Babe Ruth was a famous Italian-American home run hitter who had once played for the Red Sox. When he was 19, he had already become one of Baltimore’s best young baseball stars, and he signed with Jack Dunn, the owner of the Baltimore Orioles. The team called Ruth “Jack Dunn’s new baby,” and “Bambino” is just the Italian word for “baby.”

Thus, sports reporters changed “baby” to “babe” or just called him “the Bambino.” That is why the curse is called the

“Curse of the Bambino.”

When Babe Ruth played for the Red Sox, it was a very powerful baseball team. The team had won their fifth World Series in 1918. When the Red Sox traded Babe Ruth, the fans couldn’t believe that their favorite team would trade such an important player. However, the team’s manager did trade him, and bad luck soon followed. Over the next eight years, the Red Sox lost an average of 100 games every season. Even when they did make it to the World Series four times in the following 80 years, they never won the championship once.

It was on October 27, 2004, that the curse finally ended when the Red Sox won the World Series. The curse might have been a superstition, but it was very real to the Red Sox and the team’s fans during those tough years.

33. According to the article, Babe Ruth . A. was called “Jack Dunn’s baby” by the Red Sox

B. was traded to the New York Yankees from the Boston Red Sox C. started his baseball career with the New York Yankees

D. brought bad luck for the Red Sox when he was playing for the team

34. After trading Babe Ruth, the Red Sox .

A. have never won the World Series Championship again

B. ended the curse after they beat the New York Yankees in 2004 C. played in the World Series four times, but never won one until 2004 D. won an average of 100 games every season
