If you were the subject of a photograph, how would you pose? As for Asians, there is a tendency to stick up the index finger and middle finger with the palm facing outward to express happiness. Nevertheless, Europeans may find it odd when they encounter Asians flashing the gesture since it represents peace or a V for victory in western countries.

The story of how this habit started in Asia is rather interesting. Its earliest origins date back no further than the late 1960s, when an American figure skater, Janet Lynn, went to Japan for the Winter Olympics. While doing the performance, she accidentally stumbled and messed up her spinning. Instead of being crashed down by her failure, Janet smiled from ear to ear. Her optimistic attitude soon earned her abundant Japanese fans, who admired her for being courageous when facing mistakes. During media tours around Japan in the years following the Olympics, she habitually flashed the V sign. Thus, a cultural phenomenon was born.

Lynn may have imported the V sign to Japan, yet the reason why it was so commonly used in photographs should be attributed to a local musician, Jun Inoue. As a celebrity

spokesperson for Konica advertisement, Inoue flashed the gesture for the camera. With the the influence of the media, especially television, the habit soon spread around Asia. What’s more interesting is that the gesture is now being exported back to the West, shooting pictures with a V can now be seen around the world.

Most of us only go to hospital or clinic when we're not feeling well. After finishing the talk with the doctor and bringing the pills back home, you seldom check what's in the medicine as long as it gets you to feel like yourself again. But what if the medicine your doctor had given you wasn't proven to make you feel better? And yet you did get better. That is the magic trick of “placebos”, which doctors sometimes use to ease the pain of patients.

Far from really having active therapeutic effects, a placebo is a substance that contains no medicine or has only small amounts of medicine in it. At first, it is often used in medical research, in which researchers test whether a new drug can really relieve pains. There would be two groups of patients, one taking the real drugs while the other taking the fake ones—

placebos. That way, they can compare the results to figure out the effectiveness of the new drug and check for side effects.

Nowadays, the placebo effect can be applied to medical treatments in sickrooms as well. According to a survey, many doctors admit they have given their patients placebos. The reason is that they believe there is a connection between a human’s mind and body. “ Your body will react to the way you think and feel,” a doctor said. Some doctors use placebos to calm the patients who are desperate for medicine but in fact don’t need any. They come up with creative explanations about the placebo treatment to avoid an outright lie. For instance, they would describe the placebos as something that “may help but would not harm” the patients. Even though the pills they prescribed don’t have actual pain-relieving effect, the patient’s expectation of getting better can actually result in the reduction of pain and the improvement of an illness. This is how placebos play its trick on all of us.

64. What is a placebo?

(A) A kind of medicine that has mild effects. (B) A kind of medicine that brings quick recovery. (C) Something that has strong medical effects. (D) Something that has little or no medicine in it.

65. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “desperate”? (A) In the state of being excited.

(B) Feeling sure about the ability to do things. (C) Showing a strong desire for something. (D) Plucking up one’s courage to do something. 66. How do placebos work in the medical treatment?

(A) They can cure the patients with serious disease such as cancer. (B) They can help identify the side effects of the new medicine.

(C) They are prescribed by the doctors to improve the health condition gradually. (D) They are used based on how strongly a person expects to have good results. 67. According to the passage, which of the following statement is NOT TRUE?

(A) Doctors often think of other ways to describe the pills while prescribing placebos. (B) It is believed that the placebo effect is associated with human’s mind rather than body.

(C) The original purpose of using placebos is to test whether a new drug can cure patients. (D) A placebo can also be as effective as medicine in providing relief if it works.
