Reading Comprehension (24%)

[A] It was a quiet summer night in Kaohsiung on July 31. Then, a series of explosions suddenly ripped through one of the city's downtown districts. The blasts blew manhole covers high into the air, turned roads into deep trenches, and threw cars up onto the roofs of buildings. They also caused several fires and killed at least 30 people while injuring hundreds more. As firefighters and rescue workers raced to the scene, investigators began to look into the cause of the explosions, which were thought to have been caused by underground gas leaks.

Immediately following the explosions, emergency rooms in local hospitals in Kaohsiung began to be filled with the injured victims of the blasts, many of whom were suffering from lacerations and burns. More than twenty hospitals around Kaohsiung stayed busy throughout the night treating victims. As dawn finally broke the following morning, most of the fires in the blast area had been put out, but search and rescue efforts by paramedics and rescue dogs continued for much of the rest of the day. Late in the afternoon, the area was declared safe, and some residents began to return to their homes. Heavy equipment was brought in to the area to clear away debris from the main streets.

Relief efforts also began quickly after the disaster. Emergency shelters were set up in schools to accommodate the 12,000 residents who had been evacuated from the area. Nearby hotels also provided lodging and facilities for those affected by the blasts. Supplies, including food, blankets, and bottled water, were sent to the area by the Tzu Chi Foundation, the Red Cross, and other charitable organizations. Donations also came from major Taiwanese companies, like Formosa Plastics Group, Foxconn, and Acer, as well as Taiwanese politicians, celebrities, and average citizens. By early August, donations by companies and individuals had reached NT$2.38 billion, exceeding the NT$1.6 billion in donations from the Executive Yuan.

At the same time, investigators began to look into the exact cause of the explosion. Their investigations seemed to point the finger of blame at the LYC Chemical Corporation, which owned the pipe that had leaked propene and triggered the explosions. In August, seven employees of this company were indicted by the Kaohsiung District Prosecutors' Office and charged with negligence and endangering public safety.

Reconstruction efforts are now underway in the areas affected by the blasts, and the Greater Kaohsiung Government has stated that it intends to have the 6 kilometers of damaged roads repaired by mid-November, with the entire disaster area scheduled to be rebuilt by mid-December.

[B] Oscar Wilde's spectacular fall from grace is one of the best-known and most tragic stories in the history of literature. Born in Dublin in 1854, the son of an eye surgeon and a well-known poet, Wilde graduated from Oxford in 1878 and moved to London where he rapidly became a celebrity and the most important figure in the Aesthetic movement. A lecture tour to the United States and Gilbert and Sullivan's mockery of him in their comic operetta Patience only increased his fame. He published poetry, fairy tales and a scandalously successful novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray. The protagonist Dorian Gray, worried the his youth and beauty are fading day by day, pledges his soul if only his portrait could bear the burden of age and ugliness, allowing him to stay forever young. In 1884, Wilde married Constance Lloyd and moved into the house in Tite Street, Chelsea, which is now marked by a blue plaque. By the mid-1890s he was the popular author of epigrammatic comedies like Lady Windermere's Fan and The Importance of Being Earnest. But in 1895, the Marquess of Queensberry, disapproving of Wilde's friendship with his son Lord Alfred Douglas, sent a note addressed to Wilde, criticizing how his improper desire and behavior offend public decency. Unwisely, Wilde decided to sue for libel and set in motion a sequence of events that ended with him accused of and imprisoned for homosexuality. After his release from prison, Wilde was a broken man and died in exile in Paris in 1900. Stories of his last words emphasize that he retained his wit to the end. Seriously ill in a cheap Paris hotel room he is reputed to have said, "This wallpaper will be the death of me -one of us will have to go.”

[C] Even in this age of the Internet, which seems to serve as a ready source of information and entertainment, television is not about to go. As a matter of fact, it keeps expanding its influence. But TV lovers, listen up. According to research conducted in Australia, watching too much television could shorten your life. The report showed that every hour of TV viewing by one after the age of 25 may steal 22 minutes from one’s total lifespan. It also revealed that a person watching an average of six hours of TV a day would live a life that is 4.8 years less than that of someone who watches no TV.

Based on a survey conducted in 1999-2000, the study involved more than 11,000 subjects aged 25 and above. Participants were required to record the amount of time they spent watching TV or videos in the previous week as their main activity (i.e., not doing other things or chores simultaneously).

Dr. Lennert Veerman and his colleagues from the University of Queensland discovered that long hours spent in front of the box are equally as risky as smoking and obesity. “White smoking rates are declining, watching TV is not, which has implications at a population level,” Dr. Veerman said.

On average Australians watch two hours of TV a day. According to the formula acquired from the study, their life expectancy is predicted to be shortened by 1.8 years for males and 1.5 years for females.

No matter how you interpret the implications about death drawn from this research, one thing is for sure: too much sitting is not beneficial to your physical health, and your mental health. It is important that TV lovers give it a second thought before indulging themselves again in TV.
