A Study of the Attitudes toward Arts and the Factors of Elementary School Students in Changhua County

ABSTRACT

The main purposes of this study are to understand the attitudes toward art of elementary school students in Changhua county and to explore the differences of the attitudes toward art of the elementary school students from different background. Based on the results, some suggestions will be offered, which may improve art education in elementary school. Questionnaire was used in this study. The main subjects were fifth and sixth grade students in public elementary school. The samples were selected through judgment sampling (purposive sampling) and cluster sampling. The total number of samples is 913. The instrument of this study is self-made “Art Attitude Inventory of Elementary School Students.” The collected data of this study was analyzed by “Descriptive Statistics,”

“Independent-Samples T Test” and “One-way MANOVA”. Following are the results of the study: 1.Senior elementary school students’ attitudes toward art are not positive enough. 2.The differences of attitudes toward art of senior elementary school students from different background are as follows: (1)The gender was a significant variation among the all and the sub-layers of the attitudes toward art. The girls possessed more positive attitude than the boys. (2)The grade was no significant variation among the all and three sub-layers of “the attitude toward loving art,” “the attitude toward learning art” and “the attitude toward participating in artistic activities.” However, on the layer of “the attitudes toward art value and importance,” there is a significant variation between fifth and sixth grade elementary school students. (3)There is a significant variation among the all and the sub-layers of the attitudes toward art between art-educated class and general class. The art-educated class students possessed more positive attitude than the general class students. (4)The amount of time devoted to learning art was a significant variation among the all and the sub-layers of elementary school students’ the attitudes toward art. (5)Whether or not student’s parents, relatives or friends majored in art or worked in art-related field is a significant variation among the all and the sub-layers of elementary school students

’ the attitudes toward art. (6)The senior elementary school students in different sizes of schools show a significant variation among the all and the three sub-layers of “the attitude toward loving art,” “the attitude toward art value and importance” and “the attitude toward learning art.” Accordingly, this study would offer some advices for educational institutions,communities, art education in elementary schools, parents and subsequent studies in the future, which was a reference of art education and future research.
