In 2020, number of households using the Internet increased by 1,200 year-on-year to 183,500, accounting for 91.9% of the total households.

Number of households using fibre optic broadband connection continued to rise, up by 6.5% year-on-year to 147,800, taking up 80.5% of the total households using the Internet. The proportion of households using mobile broadband to access the Internet (179,800) grew by 0.1 percentage point year-on-year to 98.0%, which indicated a growing prevalence of mobile broadband usage among households.

There were 144,100 households with computer equipment, which accounted for 72.2% of the total households, down by 3.4 percentage points year-on-year. Households with laptops (96,000) increased by 1.3% year-on-year, while those with desktop computers (78,400) and tablets (93,300) decreased by 15.8% and 0.6% respectively.

Internet users totalled 566,300, an increase of 2.2% year-on-year; the Internet penetration rate rose by 1.0 percentage point to 87.5%. The Internet penetration rates for males and females were 88.2% and 86.9% respectively, up by 0.9 and 1.1 percentage points.

The Internet penetration rates for the population aged 25-34 and 15-24 were 98.7% and 99.3% respectively, up by 0.7 and 0.1 percentage points year-on- year. In addition, 73.2% of the population aged 55 and above used the Internet, representing a 4.2 percentage point growth.

As regards frequency of using the Internet, 93.6% of the Internet users used the Internet daily, an increase of 0.1 percentage point year-on-year.

Regarding purpose of using the Internet, most of the Internet users used the Internet for Communication (95.9%) and Online Entertainment (83.9%), albeit year-on-year decreases of 0.2 and 1.8 percentage points in the respective shares. Meanwhile, the proportion for E-banking (51.0%) went up by 11.6 percentage points.

Internet users with tertiary education totalled 172,700, up by 6.7%

year-on-year; the Internet penetration rate stood at 98.6%, the same as in 2019. Meanwhile, the rate for Internet users with primary education and lower rose by 3.8 percentage points to 69.2%.

Data collection for the Survey on Information Technology Usage in the Household Sector was conducted in the fourth quarter of 2020 through a supplementary questionnaire of the Employment Survey.

Multiple answers were allowed on: the types of computer equipment and Internet connection; the purpose, device and location for accessing the Internet; and the types of online shopping.

There were 97.1% of the Internet users who accessed the Internet at home, down by 0.4 percentage points year-on-year; meanwhile, the proportion of those accessing the Internet at any location via mobile phone remained unchanged at 94.5%.

The reference period for information technology usage refers to the three months prior to the date of interview.

Mobile phone users totalled 606,600, an increase of 2.1% year-on-year. Mobile phone owners totalled 584,400, accounting for 90.3% of the total population.

The proportion of Internet users using mobile phones to access the Internet stayed the same year-on-year, at 94.5%. On the other hand, the shares of Internet users using laptops/tablets (33.3%) and desktop computers (28.5%) dropped by 2.3 and 2.9 percentage points respectively.

Travel Services Others

In 2020, there were 145,000 Internet users who shopped online, up by 17.0% year-on-year. Those who purchased Travel Services tumbled by 67.5% year-on-year to 8,000.

In the fourth quarter of 2020, median online shopping spending was MOP 1,000, the same as in the corresponding quarter of 2019.

Median spending on Electronic Products (MOP1,200) rose by 20.0%

year-on-year, whereas that on Clothing & Footwear, Handbags, etc.

(MOP1,000) remained unchanged. Meanwhile, median spending on Travel Services fell markedly by 55.6% to MOP2,000.

A sample size of 2,100 residential units was selected and individuals aged 3 and above living in these units were covered in the survey. In the sample, a total of 1,968 units were occupied, comprising 1,620 successful interviews, 27 refusals and 321 non-contacts; the response rate was 82.3%.

Computer users totalled 316,400 and the computer penetration rate dropped by 2.9 percentage points year-on-year to 48.9%.
