Retailers expected a slowdown in business in September, with 36% of the retailers anticipating a year-on-year sales increase, down by 4 percentage points from August. Meanwhile, 20% of the interviewed retailers predicted a year-on-year decrease in sales, up slightly by nearly 1 percentage point from August.

The interviewed restaurants & similar establishments expected their business to weaken slightly in September after the summer holidays. The proportion of interviewed establishments anticipating a year-on-year rise in receipts dropped by 3 percentage points from August to 21%. Meanwhile, 31% of the interviewed establishments predicted a drop in receipts year-on-year, up by 7 percentage points from August.

The proportions of Western Restaurants (58%) and Local Style Cafes, Congee & Noodle Shops (47%) reporting a year-on-year growth in receipts in August rose by 32 and 14 percentage points respectively from July. Meanwhile, the share of Western Restaurants (21%) showing a year-on-year decline in receipts decreased by 26 percentage points (Table 1).
Among the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments, 52%
registered a year-on-year rise in receipts in August, higher than expected by 28 percentage points. The corresponding proportions of Western Restaurants and Local Style Cafes, Congee & Noodle Shops exceeded the forecast by 37 and 35 percentage points respectively. On the other hand, 31% of the interviewed establishments recorded a decrease in receipts in August, higher than predicted by 7 percentage points (Table 2).

As regards retail trade, 69% of the interviewed retailers reported a year-on-year sales increase in August, up by 6 percentage points from July. On the other hand, 16% of the interviewed retailers registered a year-on-year sales decline, down by 11 percentage points from July.
The business performance of restaurants & similar establishments and retail trade both showed an improvement in August. There were 52% of the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments reporting a year-on-year rise in receipts in August, up by 13 percentage points from July. Meanwhile, 31% of the interviewed establishments recorded a year-on-year decrease in receipts, down by 4 percentage points.

Among the interviewed retailers, 69% registered a year-on-year sales increase in August, higher than expected by 29 percentage points.
Meanwhile, none of the interviewed Motor Vehicle Retailers anticipated a year-on-year sales growth in August, yet it turned out that 78% of them registered increase. The corresponding proportions of Watches, Clocks &
Jewellery Retailers (78%), Adults' Clothing Retailers (65%) and Department Stores (78%) exceeded the forecast by 39, 30 and 28 percentage points respectively. On the other hand, 16% of the interviewed retailers reported a year-on-year sales decrease in August, lower than predicted by 3 percentage points (Table 5).

Around 37% of the Chinese Restaurants anticipated a year-on-year rise in receipts in September, down by 11 percentage points from August.
Besides, none of the interviewed Japanese & Korean Restaurants predicted a year-on-year growth in receipts.

The proportions of Motor Vehicle Retailers (78%) and Cosmetics & Sanitary Articles Retailers (78%) showing a year-on-year sales growth in August grew by 22 and 11 percentage points respectively from July. All of the interviewed Leather Goods Retailers and 78% of the Department Stores recorded a year-on-year sales growth, the same as in July. Meanwhile, the proportions of Adults’ Clothing Retailers (15%), Cosmetics & Sanitary Articles Retailers (11%) and Motor Vehicle Retailers (22%) reporting a year- on-year sales decline slipped by 25, 22 and 11 percentage points from July respectively (Table 4).

The proportion of Supermarkets (33%) expecting a year-on-year sales growth in September fell by 22 percentage points from August, whereas the corresponding shares of Leather Goods Retailers (80%) and Department Stores (50%) remained unchanged. In addition, about 67%
of the Cosmetics & Sanitary Articles Retailers anticipated a year-on-year sales increase, up by 11 percentage points from August.

Meanwhile, 33% of the Motor Vehicle Retailers predicted a year-on-year decrease in sales in September, up by 11 percentage points, while the corresponding share of Department Stores (10%) declined by 20 percentage points (Table 6).
Results presented in this report were not extrapolated and only reflect the business performance and expectations of the sampling units. In order to achieve timeliness of the results, restaurants and retailers may not get hold of the actual sales figures at the time of data collection.

The sample of the Business Climate Survey on Restaurants & Similar Establishments and Retail Trade was selected based on the value of receipts of the establishments, comprising 167 restaurants & similar establishments (accounting for 53% of the industry’s receipts) and 135 retailers (accounting for 70% of the industry’s receipts). The Survey results were not extrapolated and only reflect the assessment of the business performance and expectations of the sample restaurants and retailers.
